    Fare thee well PS2?

So, is it dead yet? 2008 doesn't look very promising as far as new releases go. That is to say, I haven't heard about any new games at all, my source being EGM. Is it over? The system still sells (I just bought another one a week ago), but are there going to be any new games? And if there are no new releases planned, why not?

If a system still sells, why do they stop making titles? I'm a bit ignorant on the subject, so I assume it all boils down to money, like everything else. But what I'm saying is, why not continue making games for it as well as PS3? Many people (like myself) probably won't be able to afford a new console system until an even newer system gets released. Why not keep it going? I'd still buy SNES games if they kept making them.

I'm probably talking out of my ass, but I think people would still buy PS2 titles for years, if kept alive. It's not like these software companies couldn't make a team that keeps making games. It's still a great system.

I know it's a very distant and unlikely dream of mine, but I am still wishing and hoping they will make RPG Maker 4 for the PS2...and if they make it for the PS3, at least have a PS2 version for the less fortunate like myself who hasn't won a lottery lately to get a PS3 system!

The last big titles to come out for the PS2 were God of War and Persona 3. Persona 3 came out around September.

There's absolutely nothing in the horizon for the PS2.

I know . I suppose my question is, why not?

Is it just not worth it financially? Would I be the only one buying these games? (assuming they were any good)

Because there's new systems out, everyone's attention is on those, and any PS2 releases get ignored unless they're big name titles everyone is already familiar with.

And in Sony's crusade for their newer system, they're steadfastly ignoring the old system.

They did pretty much the same thing with PS1 when PS2 hit. The only games that were still coming out were poor multi-platform versions of big sellers (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4 both hit PS1, I think) and a plethora of stupid kid games.

I know. I remember when the ps2 hit. But if they kept making big titles they would still make sales. Would it interfere with the ps3? Also would no one really but the ps2 games? I know I would and I doubt I'm the only one. If they kept making quality games, they could make profit from both systems. Also I'd be happy which is really the only important thing. Is this to far fetched of an idea?

I'm sure that, by market analysis or some such crap, they decided it was best to phase out the older system instead of beating a dead horse for years and years following. There's too much "new" coming out for them to continuously support the old systems that progressively fewer and fewer people have or care about.

Plus, the big retailers have very little shelf space for every system as it is. I'm willing to bet that Wal*Mart, Circuit City, Target, Best Buy, etc. are just waiting for them to stop making new PS2 games to free that shelf space up for more PS3 games in the future.

of course, it's not going to be anywhere near as awesome as the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.

PS2 still has some life in it, with that special edition Persona 3, and you know that God of War Chains of Olympus will be ported to the console.

You'll be fine for now, you can also go back and play some games you never got to.

There are so many old PS2 games you can get for $20 it's probably hard to get many sales on anything full priced on there now. Unless it's cheap to develop like the PSP ports or something like GH3 that sells at almost any price, it's hard to make a profit.

As I understand it, there will be some PSP games released on PS2, like Silent Hill Origins, and God of War: Chains of Olympus.

I am kind of sad that the PS2 version of Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed got canceled. Now I'll have to buy it for Wii or PSP.
