I got my RPG Maker game in the mail on Friday but guess what? Just my luck! I can't find my PSX memory cards. I think they were lost in the move... So for now I'm just kinda sitting around... Getting used to the system... Anyways here's my question:
How come I can edit a dungeon but not the field map or the towns?
I have a few others but depending on the answer to this one I may or may not have to post them...
Maybe an ADMIN can move this to The RPG Maker General Boards because this board isn't very active...

The board's not active cuz RM1 is OLD.
:buddy
Moving on...
The Field Map is ala "Illusion of Gaia" wherein you walk around on a "map" not ala the FFs wherein you walk around and get to randomly encounter monsters. You could attempt to make a gigantic dungeon into a world map, but that WILL take immense ammounts of space that you have yet to "find" :lol
The "towns" are just "dungeons" where the are no encounters with monsters. You can make city layouts or the insides of the buildings themselves depending on what the map is set to (in/out) but you can't make transitions into buildings like the old Dragon Warrior games... :droplet
You'll get the hang of it, just keep sticking to your guns!

Many of us use the "new posts" feature of the site.
Your thread won't be overlooked.

field maps are data you need to edit in the system data section under the "field" subheading.
you can tile the map and you can add towns and paths (access the menu to change from tile mode to town or path mode). you have a max of 30 towns per map so maybe thats why you cant add towns since it doesnt allow you to exceed that. all inside towns are done using the dungeon edit, and you link to them using move field/dungeon commands which are found as part of a town info or by using an event in a dungeon map.
i hope that helps.

Alright I get it... Is there anyway to make your own combat system? The default one is SOO ugly!

Custom Battle Systems are possible, but they can only be done "outside" the actual battle system, using things like flags and "placeholder" items. It's extremely hard, so you shouldn't even think about attempting it yet.

i made one for one of my mini games and i can tell you its complex and a huge waste of memory. its possible and a few others have some very good ones, but i found it just meh. do without battles seems to be a better choice or use a custom system sparingly (short games can make this work well since they arnt cramped for space).

...then again, you COULD try your hand at RM2!
Unlike RM1 (and 3 :evil) RM2 is like a "Sky's-the-Limit" Maker as far as the things that you may/may not find "ugly" If nothing else, you'll definatly want to try it out.
AND, not to take away from the series or anything, if you're really ambitious, you could attempt to program your own game. If you think RM1 is ugly, you should see my attempt at self programing... :vomit

some people just cant program, i am one of those people. in that case its better to use a simple program like rpg maker 1 where the game fills in the blanks for you and all you have to do is set up the event.
I could self program a game that is equal to the looks and feel of RPGM1, but it takes FOREVER to make just the initial setup, and I dont have that kind of patience.

Well I don't care very much about changing the battle system MUCH, I would just like a sideways view of the battle (Like you can see both parties and they "Hop" across the battlefield to attack. Or at least something similar.)... Is this possible?

:(
If you wanted to do that youd have to make an entire script over and over for each battle, which will take a huge amount of memory.

Or try RM2, or RMXP or C++...

Just go with what you got, RPG Maker is a very cool game! It's all about the story anyway. :)
Start with one and later move on to RPG Maker 2.
Most of all, have fun! :)
Peace.
