    Patapon and other things

Is anyone else planning on buying this next Wednesday? Sad as it is, now that I own a PS3, I needed an excuse to buy a PSP, and this game is it. Bought the Daxter bundle from work today (I would have loved the white Darth Vader PSP, but the Daxter bundle was a MUCH better value)...so it looks as if I'll be forced to watch Family Guy at least once.

As for Patapon, I went to Gamestop after work to see what they had PSP-related, and ended up putting a preorder down on Patapon, and got a free demo disc. I'll probably play it tonight.

As for the game itself, I've read two glowing reviews so far (the game is being released next Wednesday), and seems to be some strange amalgamation of a rhythm action game, an RTS game, and a 2D platformer (of sorts). It's made by the same people who made Loco Roco (which I recently downloaded to my PS3), and seems to be exactly my style of game...quirky and genre-redefining (well, genre-defining, I guess in this case). Plus, it's only $20.00. I guess Sony put a lower price point on the game in order to entice those on the fence. If the reviews I've read are any indication, this is a game that deserves to become to next Katamari.

Hehe...I've told at least four people IRL about this game, and every one of them thought I was saying "pedophile" at first.

So is anyone else with a PSP going to picking this up?

I've read a review in EGM. It seems to be really good. I won't be able to pick it up but it does look interesting.

I've been wanting to play it since I've seen the screenshots of it. Hearing the gushing reviews makes me want to play it even more.

This and the Star Ocean remakes are what made me decide to stick with my PSP. For now at least. Flip flop flip flop. That's how it is with these handheld systems. I really could care less about GoW:Chains of Olympus though. I haven't even started GoWII yet.

          Pata-Pata-Pata-Pon

If I had a PSP I'd be getting this. In fact if I had the money I'd get a PSP to get this (among other things). Downstream Panic looks pretty cool too.

I just downloaded the PSP Patapon demo from the PC Playstation Store a couple days ago and from what I have played so far I'm thinking of buying it as well

Hmm? I didn't post my review topic about this game in December? Ahh, well here's a copy and paste post from my review on another forum.
                    ----------------------
Patapon came out in Japan recently. I played it.

                    IT'S AWESOME.

It's a strange rhythm/real-time-strategy game and I say this loosely. You play as this weird tribal race (they remind me of Vikings mixed with Indians) called Patapon that was nearly wiped out in a war. You play as God who beats on godly drums that guides the Patapons to rebuild their lost civilization.

To do this, you play the magic drums to the rhythm of the music. Each drum (coordinated with the face buttons) issues a specific order. For example, playing Pata Pata Pata Pon (square square square circle) moves your troop forward while playing Pon Pon Pata Pon (circle circle square circle) issues an attack. Chain your moves high enough earns you FURRY which causes the music to speed up but your orders have more effect.

Each "mission" has you collecting gold (used to build troops), items or advancing the storyline to rebuild your civilization. You use these items to build troops by combining materials to craft new Patapon. You have various troops such as Speer-chuckers, melee-combatants, and archers. In addition, troops can be customized; not only do the materials you choose to build your troops affect their stats (and you can create super units in this method). Troops can also be equipped with items; for example, melee troops can be equipped with various weapons like axes and swords which affect different armors and enemies to certain degree.

At first I thought the game was going to be repetitive but it slowly introduces you to new elements and troop combinations as well as new challenges. There's mini-games that net you new items (such as having a rock contest with a singing tree) and some of the bigger enemies and bosses are pretty tough. The levels get really hectic and the more badguys you hack through, the tougher it gets to keep up the beat.

The music is awesome. It's like, straight Celtic style music with heavy emphasis on war drums. I love the simple graphics and even though most of the game's characters consist of like... one color, it moves incredibly fluidly. I haven't seen animation this fluid since Wind Waker and the style is crisp and sharp on the PSP's screen.

                      Re: Patapon and other things

So I preordered this last week, and got a free demo disc with it that includes some "exclusive" weapon. I've not played it until today, but I have to say that this game is addicting as hell. I've played a short way through a few times (apparently in the demo, there's no way to save until you play to the end of the demo, and I turned it off a few times), and played all the way through once. Then I made a pizza, and while it was cooking, I decided to play again. I just can't stop.

This should be at retail today, and at $20, anyone with a PSP has NO excuse not to buy it.

                          PON PON PATA PON

                          PATA PATA PON PATA

I got the game today. It's pretty fun and I love the art style. The little voices whenever you beat a level are pretty annoying though.

It plays out like a sidescroller where you march your troops from left to right controlling the patapon's movements with the commands you give them to the beat of the divine drum. But there are little stratgy and RPG elements thrown into it as well. It's a lovely hybrid of different genre ideas.

And it's no longer called FURRY it's FEVER now.

yeah, the sound of the voices dosn't bother me. but when they sing slower than the beat or OVER the beat so as to screw me up, they get annoying

also, it seems like half the time the game dosn't want to tell you what to do(or how to do something). kinda weird. and having to work up a fever for the miracles is annoying as hell. but i still play it
