The truth of this video is debatable, but it was enough to make me want to take my Facebook account down. Besides, I don't use it, like ever. If people really want to contact me, there's several other ways to go about it.
And I post enough details about my life on these boards anyway. :spin

I only have a damn facebook because of a girl who I met in Dubai wanted me to get one to stay in contact with her.
So either have all my private information public to corporations, or cut off getting my Denethor on.

Not really, just sick of Facebook. I suppose anti-conformist would be more appropriate a term.

That's about it.

A lot of that stuff is speculative. Okay, so, they sell other companies the fact that I watch Dexter on a regular basis. And? Is that fact going to make them harass my family? Cancel my credit cards? No. I don't even get more junk e-mail than normal. So what, I don't care if they know that I'm a redhead, I'm not going to be sent a flyer for the new Garnier Hair Dye or some crap. I. Don't. Care.

That's because by modern standards, EVERYBODY in America is fat that doesn't look like an emaciated Leonardo DiCaprio.

to add, a lot of the stuff in that vid seems a bit conspiracy oriented and more sensationalist then it really is. facebook has to pay for the bandwidth somehow, so if they are doing that by selling to market research then go for it. its nothing different then what other companies are doing.

No.
Most people in America are fat because they eat too many meals out, fail to exercise, and include large amounts of processed foods high in fat and high fructose corn syrup in their diets.
Is it their fault? Partly.

Damn strait its their fault! There is alittle something called self-control. I realize that some people have naturally slow metabolisms, and thus can't really help it if they have alittle bit of chub(or quite a bit of chub). I don't really care about that. Its the people who are endangering their lives because they won't spend five minutes to make a PB&J sandwhich (Jam, not Jelly, Jelly=gross), but instead take a 5-20 minute drive to MickeyD's and order a processed piece of garbage and wait five minutes to get it. Then they order a Diet Coke, thinking that it makes up for the 4,000 calorie pile of nasty they just ate. Then they blame the fast food chain because they got fat and had a heart attack, or got diabetese, or both.
God I hate those people! Like the woman who sued McDonalds because she burned herself. SHE HAD THE CUP OF COFFEE SITTING ON THE ARM REST IN HER GRANDSON'S SPORTS CAR! WHILE IT WAS MOVING!! :explosion
But when the world goes into an Ice Age. The fat Americans will survive, causing a new revolution to begin while Canada freezes :spin
I'm not talking about the movie.

American society makes it very difficult to stay fit. We are the most busy people on earth, so we have to eat out a lot. Most of the food in resteraunts and fast food joints is garbage. The government puts tarrifs on sugarcane, so companies use HFC instead of real sugar.
That being said, there's still no reason to be 25-30 lbs overweight. None whatsoever. If you are, you need to step back and reevaluate your life and whether or not you value it.

canada is already frozen. we would survive an ice age anyway because we deal with cold winters every year. its only your silly americans in your nice warm climates that need fat for an ice age. we will just keep building our igloos and dressing ourselves in moose skins.

Obviously you've never been to Wisconsin.
I have a Facebook and a Myspace. I don't put anything on there that could put me into any danger, and I get no more spam email than I did before I joined. I rarely use them, and I only use it to keep in contact with a few old friends from high school and college.

And like the ones who have posted here, I don't care if some marketing group knows I like listening to Gavin DeGraw. Hell, they'll even send me an advance screening of his new song if I sign up for it.

It's a slippery slope, people. I'm not saying that Facebook's gathering and sharing your information is an immediate bridge to an Orwellian surveillance society, but it's a step in the wrong direction that I, for one, am uncomfortable with. I would have thought that people here would be more concerned about basic privacy rights.
I don't have a Facebook anyways, because I'm not very cool.

The data mining on Facebook is awful. Honestly, I wish it were better. Then it wouldn't try to find an exact match when you type something in natural English.
And is there a problem with marketeers using our preferences to provide stuff for us that we like? If being "used" feels that good, then I don't want to be left alone.
Then the video goes on to talk about how anyone associated with the DoD or CIA is trying to use Facebook to turn the world into an evil Police State. What a bunch of horse****.
I'm all for ripping on Facebook as a poorly-organized, overrated marionette trying to take the place of actual friendship and networking. (I'm on there about once a month, and only because my friends keep pushing me to get on there more.) But let's call a spade a spade, rather than a conspiracy theory.

I'm in college, I have an account, I get on it once in a while, and I'll second that it's utterly useless. Fun, maybe. And a lot of people I know are addicted to it. But it's useless.

If anyone ever reads the TOS of these sites it states in clear english that by using their service you automatically agree to let them send information to their affiliates.

Im not in college, actually a high school dropout but I still make $35k+ a year working only 3 days a week, and to add to that I'm no where near how high I can get where I work. :p

Good for you, but...
1) $35,000 isn't anything
and
2) I'm kind of aiming for a base salary of say $100,000

1)considering 35K is base pay not counting the unlimited $25/hour overtime I can get.
2)Well aiming and doing is two totally different things, I wanted to be an astronaut when I was little...$100,000 a year wont buy you happiness, and making $100,000 a year wont make you better then anyone else

Realistically, though, I'm pretty sure that it does mention in the Terms of Service that it will track such things. People obviously know that Facebook is tracking them all over the internet. My point is that our allowing them to do it is setting a bad precedent.

this Orwellian style outcome is fast becoming a reality. this stuff is no longer just a possibility of the future, its the next step that technology and humanity has allowed. so far it doesnt look like all of the predictions in orwells work will come to pass, but that isnt to say they wont in the future.
no one has forced us to give up these freedoms, we have willfully signed them away ourselves. i think its that fact thats the most unsettling.
