So I finally joined the bandwagon, and now I have questions...(iPod-related)

We had a display model iPod Nano, 8 gig, at my work that was on closeout for $100, but I bought it for $60, due to it being a display model with no accessories, manual, etc. It's one of the older ones that's a little thicker than a credit card. So I downloaded iTunes, put music on it (3.5 days' worth), and then decided to peruse available podcasts (I'd never seen/heard one before, as I thought it required an iPod...I was not aware you could just watch/listen on your PC), and came to the realization that the Nano (at least the one I bought) is not able to display video. Kinda meh, but I can live without it.

Never having even handled an iPod before, it took me about five minutes to figure out how to scroll up and down the menu items, as the ffwd/rewind portions of the control did nothing to go from music to pics to podcasts, etc. I guess I just fiddled around with it to discover that it's kinda like a ribbon controller on a keyboard. So I hooked it up to my PS3, and unfortunately discovered that the music was placed into13 different folders, with no rhyme or reason to where they were being placed...entire albums I uploaded into iTunes in specific folders are now scattered throughout different folders (the songs from one album are not within a single subfolder....each of the 13 folders might have one or two songs from any particular album). So apparently if I want to listen to my iPod via my PS3, I will not be able to listen to entire albums (I saw no option for selecting individual artists or albums), and thus relegating my Nano to a glorified Shuffle. And to make matters worse, it seems I am only able to shuffle individual folders instead of the entire contents of the iPod. And all the podcasts I DLed are now contained in these same folders, so I had to search through 4 folders last night in order to listen one of the Lost podcasts I DLed.

So, I have a few questions....has anyone played their iPod through the PS3, and found a way to listen to entire albums, or choose only podcasts? Or to shuffle the entire contents of the iPod instead of individual folders? Obviously on the iPod itself you can do these things, but apparently the PS3 will not allow this.

Also, why in iTunes and on the iPod is there no stop button? Is there a way to stop playing either a song or podcast without completely exiting out of the menu you are currently in? And how do you delete music or podcasts from the iPod? I'm GUESSING that you would deselect songs or podcasts within iTunes that you no longer want, select the new ones you do want, and then re-synch it. I played around with this for a bit, and it SEEMS to be the way to do it, but I'm not sure.

I might come up with more questions later, but for now, any help would be appreciated.

Yeah you would have to add/remove songs through itunes. To stop a song from playing you just have to pause it by pressing the play pause button. You should be able to get a pdf file of the manual from apple's website.

No, I understand pausing it will stop it temporarily, but what if I just want to STOP it, without pausing? There's no way to do this I'm guessing.

An as for adding/deleting through iTunes, yeah, I know that, but I did not see an option for add/remove....I only saw "Sync iPod," which seemed to add songs and podcasts that were checked, and seemed to delete ones that were unchecked, but currently on the iPod. Is this accurate?

nope, there is no way to completely stop it. i think there is a > button or an x on the play window that lets you switch status pages. hard to explain, but not sure if thats what you wanted (wanted it blank up there so you can see how many songs you have left to update to your ipod?)

Pause + locking the iPod = stop.

            That's about how it works.

I don't recommend letting iTunes rearrange your songs into its own folders, either.

Yeah did that accidentally once. I really hate iTunes though. POS. They really need to add a function that lets you NOT need iTunes to edit things on it.

Other thing I DESPISE is how when you delete a playlist off your iPod, it just removes the playlist itself, and leaves all the songs all mixed up in the main music folder. I was wondering at first why after I deleted the playlists, it didnt free up any space. Then I found the huge list of all my music and it was a ***** to go pick out and delete all the songs I wanted to take off.

But I figure it was easier, to just erase EVERYTHING off the ipod, and put only the playlists I want back on. I have a bunch of playlists I listen to in Winamp, and luckily iTunes recognizes and can use them. As soon as the rockbox guys come out with a build for the newer 6th gen iPods Im going to install it ASAP.

I consilidated my entire library into iTunes, letting them take care of organazing my folders. When you have roughly 6000 songs it helps. Then I have my iPod hooked up to auto-sync.

When you let iTunes handle everything when you delete something off your playlist it asks you if you'd also like to permanetly delete it off your computer. And then everything you do with iTunes whether it be your library or your playlists it will correspond to your iPod--if you tell the iPod to sync with them that is.

It seems the more you fight iTunes, the more trouble you will have with it. Just let it do it's thing. I've never had any problems letting Apple handle everything, and they even find Album artwork for me. .

6000 songs, eh? My 8 gig was able to hold about 1300 or so, for 3.5 days worth of music. Then again, my external hard drive has almost 100 gigs of music on it....I'm not really sure exactly how many songs that is, but quite a few, I'd imagine.
