Closer to 1984/Minority Report/Children of Men/take your pick

Or Shangri-La, where everyone is safe and happy!

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/02/04/f...ics/index.html

The FBI is gearing up to create a massive computer database of people's physical characteristics, all part of an effort the bureau says to better identify criminals and terrorists.

But it's an issue that raises major privacy concerns -- what one civil liberties expert says should concern all Americans.

The bureau is expected to announce in coming days the awarding of a $1 billion, 10-year contract to help create the database that will compile an array of biometric information -- from palm prints to eye scans.

Kimberly Del Greco, the FBI's Biometric Services section chief, said adding to the database is "important to protect the borders to keep the terrorists out, protect our citizens, our neighbors, our children so they can have good jobs, and have a safe country to live in."

But it's unnerving to privacy experts.

"It's the beginning of the surveillance society where you can be tracked anywhere, any time and all your movements, and eventually all your activities will be tracked and noted and correlated," said Barry Steinhardt, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Technology and Liberty Project.

The FBI already has 55 million sets of fingerprints on file. In coming years, the bureau wants to compare palm prints, scars and tattoos, iris eye patterns, and facial shapes. The idea is to combine various pieces of biometric information to positively identify a potential suspect.
Discuss then devolve into flaming and general douchebaggery.

It doesn't really bother me. Because whether I'm being monitored or not it doesn't mess with my routine at all. However, this isn't the right thing to do. People need their space, man.

Eh, they'll implement the system and then freak out and remove it, after realizing the fact that half of the nation indulges in auto-eroticism at any point in time.

              Yeah, but it's cold!!!

Anyway, yeah, we ARE in a police state. Trigger happy cops, drug dealing, tasers, abuse of power...the system is rotten. Something's gotta happen.

55 million sets of fingerprints sounds like a lot, but we've got a population of over 300 million in the U.S. There's no way you're tracking immigrants, legal or otherwise, with biometric data unless it's been gathered from a previous run-in with authorities.

I would guess, given the expense and difficulty collecting biometric data, that most of the population will be unaffected. I worked for a security company trying to develop facial recognition software (with the volunteered help of their employees). I didn't volunteer, buuut it took 2-3 minutes of sitting very still while a camera photographed you from different angles and created a profile. It's not something that could be generated from everyday security cameras. Ultimately, this is just another step along the path that fingerprints started us out on.

If you'd all just get subdermal chips like your pets, we could avoid the expense of biometrics.
So you're a fish out of water...

I have a scar on my eyebrow so I'll be easy to find if I decide to rob a K-Mart.

But why would I do that?

Screw it, I'm moving to Canada.

Now, I've got nothing to hide but yeah, this is just a step towards 1984. If George Washington was here today he'd kick the ass of whoever thought this up.

wow, this is really scary. it sounds way too much like science fiction for my taste.
