    My computerz abouts to dIe!

I took my comp fan apart this morning to clean the heatsink and the fan, now the fan stays on high speed all the time, is there any way to fix this? or why is it doing this? Its really loud and really annoying.

Im assuming it increases speed based on the core temperature, the fan normally speeds up whenever I do something that requires a lot of the computers resources, anyone recommend a good quiet CPU fan for me?

Are you sure you didn't cross a wire somewhere? It sounds like its not getting the proverbial 'chill pill' command.

nah, it was just the fan wire I disconnected, and I noted the way it was connected.

It does this all the time, even since I got the comp, but its been occurring more often lately...oh pics!

Ive had the comp for less then a year, I didnt think my place was this dusty

And yes I put that special heatsink gel back on, whatever its called...

I suggest you get a tempature controller, this will allow you to control your fan and able to see how hot your computer is.

        Here is an example.

I downloaded that, the hard drive is at 108`F

Havent figured out how to get the processor temp up yet, working on it

Explain "took my comp fan apart". Did you just disconnect it, or take apart the actual fan and its bearings?

Is it the CPU fan that came with the computer or CPU, or is it a special heatsink you bought seperately? My theory based on the information you gave us is that you had a limiter connector that goes on the heatsink cable that you lost in the process.

It's hard to explain and I don't have the exact term. Alot of fans/heatsinks have a cable extension that need to be applied to keep the fan quiet. I think it limits the voltage or something.

I'm just assuming that's what it is based on what you've said.

By the way, buy some canned air.

Re: My computerz abouts to dIe!

I just took the heatsink and the fan unit off (both were installed together with 4 screws to the motherboards, the fan lifted off the heatsink, see the last picture for the 4 screws)

The fan had a connector coming from it, but it wasnt a normal 2-wire connection, it had 4, I know it increases/decreases speed because it does increase speeds often, but now its fast all the time, there was nothing between the two connection points I could have lost.

I know I reconnected it right(there was only one way you could due to the pin casing design), so I dont know whats up

So you removed the fan from the heatsink? Did you screw it back on too tight or not tight enough? It could be vibrating because its too loose, or loud because the fanblades are hitting the heatsink.

I'm still suspecting the cabling. I need to know if the fan had just one cable, or if the cable connected into another cable.

Also, make sure you get some canned air. It's bad practice to clean your heatsink this way.

Didnt even think of the canned air thing, I was wondering if there was an easier way...

Heres some closer pics, the wire to the right is the only wire that comes from the fan, and is black, red, yellow, blue.

EDIT TO ADD: Its not hitting on anything, the fans RPM's are just extremely high, like I can hear it in other rooms of the house with the doors shut.

Get a closer shot of the cable. The glare makes me not able to see what I want to.

Edit: From what I CAN see of the computer, you have an inadequate power supply. (Unless your processor is more than five years old, in which case it wouldn't matter).

Edit 2: I have six fans in my computer, you could probably imagine how loud mine is.

                      Wow 6 fans?

My power supply is a ATX-300-12Z, this link is for a CDR, mine is a DDR

Re: My computerz abouts to dIe!

That part looks fine to me. A couple of questions though.

                        AMD or Intel?

Did you tweak any BIOS settings?

If you didn't tweak any BIOS settings, could any of the settings have gotten reset by other means? (I.E. By switching the CMOS jumper or unplugging the power without the battery connected for a while).

Are you 100% sure you have the heatsink on TIGHT? (Especially with LGA775 socket processors, it can be a ***** to get them on tight enough, and the snaps on the heatsink casing break easily).

If it's AMD, did you try tweaking the PowerNow option in the BIOS?
                        ---
At this point I'm leaning toward the heatsink not being tight enough or lack of thermal compound.

Yes, six fans. One in the rear, a massive one in my power supply, one in the side of the case, one on the CPU, one blowing toward my hard drives, and another blowing air in through the drive bays.

No offense, but unless you are 1ghz or under (pre-pentium 4 or pre-Athlon64), that power supply SUCKS. Most people don't realize at what level the power supply is responsible for cooling.

For the sake of reference, my computer (with an AMD Athlon64 X2 5200+) takes a 600watt power supply.

Edit: Have you went into your BIOS to find out what your core temperature is?

Re: My computerz abouts to dIe!

I put the heatsink on as tight as I could, and the thermal compund I used was from when I built my last computer(about 3 years ago, the thermal compound was in a ziplock bag), Ill probably redo everything tomorrow with new compound if thats what you suggest doing.

I havent done anything that could reset the BIOS, havent disconnected anything except the fan.

This is the exact computer I own.

EDIT How do you find out the core temp? Ive been in BIOS but didnt see anything about a core temp

Would you mind suggesting a good power supply? Im all up for upgrading this thing(RAM is being upgraded when I get my taxes back...512 sucks)

Found out what it was, the heatsink was on the wrong way, on the bottom of the heatsink there are small cutouts for capacitors(I think thats what they are) to sit in, I had the heatsink at a 90` angle so it was sitting on top of them and not connecting to the processor...

                              stupid me...

I tried the new power supply but it has a 20-pin harness and my motherboard has a 24-pin connector...

Ive installed a big fan blowing in, only place I could put it was in the side vents of my case right over the processor, I just need to wire it.
