PS3 Owners: Download Pixel Junk Monsters posthaste!

As I mentioned in the Rez topic, I downloaded Rez at 3 in the morning Tues night/Wed morning, but was so into playing Pixel Junk Monsters that I didn't pick up Rez until this afternoon, and even then, I only played the first level in "Traveller" mode (sue me...I've only played Rez once before a number of years ago on the Dreamcast, and then for only about 10 minutes). I'll have to play it more, I'm sure, to really get into it, but as for now, I've been playing the hell out of the game in the topic's title.

Gamespot's review gives it a 7.0 or 7.5 or something, but the user reviews average 9.1. Funny thing is, every review, "official" and otherwise, uses the word "addictive" or some variation thereof, at least once. And I'll tell you, it's 100% true. I seriously cannot stop playing this game. I downloaded it Tuesday night, and between then and at about 5 am this morning, I've probably easily spent 10-12 hours playing it. It's a "tower defense" game, which is a "genre" I'd never heard of before. But when playing RTS games (which this SORT OF is), I'm all about defense moreso than offense, so this game was perfect for me. It's just SO damn hard. I've completed 5 levels out of 20, and cannot get any further. Yesterday, I tried to complete levels I had already played without losing any of my "tribesmen," which, when done for enough levels, opens new areas.

Basically, I keep coming really close to completing the levels, and it pi**es me off to the point where I just have to play it one more time, because I'm SURE I can complete it this time. Next thing I know, three hours have gone by, and it's now 4:30 in the morning. The most common words out of my mouth while playing are, "God Dammit!" But in a good, "I like the challenge" way. Right now, the game is $7.99 in the Playstation Store, and it's strongly hinted that the price will eventually increase.

So if you're into addictive strategy games, I recommend this one highly.

So how well does it expand on the trillion Flash tower defense games?

I've been ignoring the game. If it's addictive than I want it.

the demo of pixeljunk racers makes me wary of any game with the word "pixeljunk" in the title. that game was ****ing garbage.

@ Postulate Man: Seeing as how I just said that I was not aware there even WAS a "tower defense" genre until playing this game, I'm not really qualified to answer that question. However, the Gamespot review does mention the flash games, so you might do well to look up the review there. I'm sorry...I really do not have an answer.

Can you upgrade the towers at all? All the video footage I've just watched only shows the little guy creating towers.

You cannot upgrade the existing towers, no. But as the enemies are defeated, they leave coins and blue jewels...the coins are used to buy and place towers, and the jewels can be used to either increase the strength/range/etc of existing towers, or you can save them up and invest them in a new tower type.

Basically, you start out with three types of towers (cannon, arrow, and anti-air, which is kind of like a machine gun), and when you invest the dropped jewels, you can unlock flamethrower towers, ice towers, which slow enemies down, a tesla tower to electrocute them, and about 4 more types. The strategy is basically, do I take the time to stand on a tower and dance, which, after time, upgrades their attributes (the more work they do, they go up slowly as well), or do you not have the time to do that, as you also need to collect the dropped items and build new towers in order to maximize your defenses as quickly as possible, and instead spend the gems on a quick and instant upgrade to stats, at the expense of being able to save for a bigger and better tower later on?

It's basically about weighing your instantaneous needs to stop the onslaught if need be, or weigh your options and save up for better stuff later.

I hated Pixel Junk Racers, that game was horrible. I hope it was a different dev team or something, because Pixel Junk Monsters is freaking awesome! I'm big on base defense in games like Warcraft and other RTS games, no one can get past my defense, for the most part.

But this game is fun and challenging. Anyone with a PS3 and has a Japanese account can actually download a demo from the japanese store, and the demo is in english, but for whatever reason the US doesnt have a demo yet, just the full game.

Atleast try the demo if you can, it is very good!

I downloaded the game. It's pretty tight.

Why did you say no and then proceed to explain how you upgrade the towers? I like how you upgrade the towers in this game, though. Really forces me to think about which towers are most effective to upgrade and even further, whether to buy the upgrade with a blue crystal or if I can afford to wait and dance. Plus the idea of controlling an avatar as opposed to the simple point and click god-like interface of most of the flash games adds something to it.

Leave it to Explodarich to necro with new info.

Yes, I have a PSP, however, I'm not sure I'd pick this up, as I really don't play it now on the the PS3. And if I'm in a wifi hotspot, I can use remote play to play this anyway.

Those without PS3s but have PSPs are encouraged to pick this up, however.
