What program do you guys use to encode/transcode music?

Just curious if there is a good, configurable, free program out there to convert files, and rip CDs to MP3. I can't do it in Winamp because you have to get Pro, and I can't do it in Nero because you have to buy their MP3 program, so I was just curious if anyone knew of a freeware program to do this. I really like the configurability of Winamp (being able to customize the file name and path they output to), but of course you can't do MP3.

I would really like to be able to have a program where I can rip the CD to FLAC for computer playing (Since I have tons of space) and then transcode those to MP3 later when I want to listen to then on a portable device or in my car. Really wish MP3 didn't have licensing fees just to use the codec.

So any suggestions? If not I guess I'll just encode to FLAC on the PC and MP3 using the PS3, then transfer via USB.

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for, but it sounds like Audacity, a free music-editing program, should be able to get it done.

I don't understand where this is necessary. I know when I put songs downloaded from my CDs onto my PSP, they play without me messing about with the formats. Does it automatically reconfigure them somehow, or what? And if not, why is it they seem to work?

Well basically I want to be able to make MP3 cds and then eventually will get a portable MP3 player, however many programs will not let you rip to MP3 directly because of licensing issues around the format. I found some here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD_ripper I'm going to try out (seems all the freeware ones use the LAME encoder so I'm going to get that). As for wanting FLAC on my PC, that's so I can have an exact copy quality wise of the CD at about half the size on my PC, so then I don't even need the CD to reencode if I need to (which is also a lot faster), and since I have the space on the computer might as well encode at the highest quality. And I don't know of a lot of things that use FLAC as a portable (and my car stereo won't accept FLAC encoded CDs), plus the portable devices don't have as much space so it's better to sacrifice a little quality to fit more songs.

FLAC is supported by quite a few free things since the codec doesn't have any proprietary licenses around it that I know of. MP3 however is harder to find, and the PS3 doesn't have any configuration besides bitrate and I would like to have a little more control than that.

Windows Media Player 10 lets me rip CDs. It lets you choose from a few different formats too, including high quality MP3.

            iTunes does this as well.

As I had the same problem you did (not being able to rip MP3s directly), I got advice from my friend on using something called dbPower AMP. I'm not sure the program will rip CDs directly, but if you have a file in one format, and you need it in another format, just about every kind of plug-in imaginable exists for this program to transcode it for you. Granted, this takes more time than ripping it that way directly, but like you, I was not willing to pay to upgrade my software just to be able to rip MP3s. Hope this helps.

You already have a portable Mp3 player. PSP, remember?

I'm going to plug iTunes again because it's so simple.

If you use iTunes to rip your CDs, though, doesn't it encode them with DRM, so it's hard to transfer your files between devices?

Nope. In fact I use iTunes to make ringtones for my phone.

I think you missed the free part Red (free legally that is).
                            Itunes is gay.

If I'd known that iTunes liked men I would've hated it, too. I feel so betrayed.
