One map. Four weeks. Complete freedom.
It's time to make your dreams come true.

Welcome to the Field of Dreams contest for RPG Maker 3. Your goal is simple: make a single Field Map that will make our jaws drop. How you pull that off is up to you. If your creation is impressive enough, you'll score some nice prizes and serious bragging rights.

Judges and Scoring:

The Contest Judges are:
* Wavelength (Blueshift14@yahoo.com)--Contest Coordinator
* Obright (BCtimebandit@earthlink.net)
* JPS (JStaples@highspeedlink.net)

Please submit your map to all three judges via email, and either post in this topic or PM each judge to let us know you've submitted an entry. If you don't have access to a Max Drive, we will now allow a submission by mail. Click here (http://www.pavilionboards.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16172) for more information.

The contest deadline is Sunday, February 24 (at 11:59pm PST).

Each judge will spend 15-30 minutes with your map, and rate it in the following four categories. The map with the highest aggregate score (average of all three judges' scores) will win.

40% for Aesthetics: Are we impressed by your map's visual appeal as we traverse it? Does it create a sense of place? Sheer quality and artistic direction are both important.

30% for Wanderlust: Do we enjoy exploring and (if applicable) interacting with your map? Is it a joy to explore? If we were to spend a long time with this map, would it continue to inspire intrigue/wonder/excitement?

20% for Originality: Does your map do something different or better than RPGM maps we've seen in the past? And more importantly, do these unique touches add to the map's overall quality?

10% for Technical: Can we (easily) get everywhere on the map that we should be able to? Is your coding completely bug-free? Did you follow every contest rule? Avoid making mistakes and you'll earn full points in this category.

Judges reserve the right to deduct further points for major violations of contest rules.

Contest Rules:

SUBMISSIONS--Please submit your map on its own file--nothing that's unrelated to your map should be on the file. If you can't accomodate this due to memory card constraints, that's okay, but make sure you clearly let us know which map we are judging. Remember to submit the file to all three judges, and please use Slot 3 if possible.

WE WILL POST STUFF--Obright has kindly offered to take screenshots of every entry which we will post alongside each review. Also, we plan to post each game file so that Pavvies can download and experience your map for themselves. If you don't want us to post the map, let us know when you enter.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY--Entrants retain possession over all intellectual property involved in map-making. Do not use other peoples' maps in your games without their explicit permission!!!

TWO ENTRIES PER PERSON--You may enter up to two maps in this contest. They must be on separate files. Your score will be the higher of the two maps' scores (that is, entering a second map cannot hurt you).

ORIGINAL WORK--The map must be created solely by you, the entrant. You cannot use a map that has already been released as part of a demo or full game, and you cannot create your map by starting from an already-released map (or from any Default Maps). You may use a map that you started working on before this contest was announced, so long as it hasn't been released.

WE WILL TALK--Judges will discuss contest entries with each other during the judging phase in order to give everyone a fair shake--we want to make sure none of us miss something cool, for example, that we shouldn't have missed.

NO BATTLES--Do not include any battles on your map, whether Random or Event.

ONE MAP--Remember, the map we're judging must be a Field Map made in RPG Maker 3. Your map should not lead into other parts of your game, nor should it include any game-related plot. It should consist be one Field Map, not a combination of several. However, there are exceptions...

* "Sub-Maps"--You can use "sub-maps" created in any editor (Dungeon, Town, or Field) in order to enhance your main (judged) map. For example, you might have a cave opening or an island on your main map--you can warp the player to a SMALL cave or island created using the Dungeon Editor or another Field Map in order to "flesh out" your main map. Sub-Maps must be clearly subordinate to your main map and shouldn't take more than a minute to explore. Going overboard could lead to a deduction.

* Coding--Feel free to use any event model, event scripting, or decoration that pleases you. Perhaps you want a rainbow to appear automatically at a certain time of the day, or allow the player to examine a stone wall to read the text carved onto it. Remember that it cannot include any per-se plot, and shouldn't include anything like a difficult puzzle that would impede our progress in judging your entry.

Prizes:

The winning mapmaker will receive a $25 gift card to any venue of their choice. If you have no preference or I can't obtain a gift card for that place, I'll buy you a $25 gift card to GameStop. (In order to qualify for this, there must be at least four entrants and the winning map's average score must be at least 75%.)

The top three mapmakers will also receive a Pavilion-related prize. I can't say anything else at this time, except that it has no monetary value but it's something you'll definitely want. :)

And of course, showing well in this contest is not only a testament to your skill as a creator, but great promotion for your games.

Questions?

Feel free to post them right here or PM Wavelength.

So you want us to tell if we're enterying? Well I'm entering.

Two Maps you say. Something never seen in an RPGM3 map? Well in that case I'm entering my little demo map I made for Holy-Chaos. That map hasn't been seen yet so it should be good right?

Wavelength

As long as the community hasn't seen your map yet, you're allowed to enter it, Lausen. But you'll mostly likely need to make some modifications--remember to follow the "no plot" rules and the like.

Just wanted to point out that I added a rule "No Battles." Your map should not contain any Random or Event battles.

I think this should have been rather obvious, but I wanted to make sure everyone was clear about it.

I was wondering if there is a preference as to which character model should be used for traversing the map, or do the judges just create their own character on their own? As everyone knows, some of the models are just extremely slow.

Also, just out of curiosity, how many sub-maps are allowed? (I know that they must only take one minute each to explore)

JPS
02-02-2008, 04:56 PM
Im assuming(not for a fact) that the main character doesnt matter and would not be counted against you(I prefer the chicken, due to its extremely fast movement)

And Im also assuming that you can have as many submaps as you want.

I would wait until Obright and Wave verify this before I actually do it though

Wavelength

Use whichever character model you please.

You didnt answer the submap question

Pagerron

Use whichever character model you please.

Okay, that's cool.

And regarding the submaps, I'd like to have one small field submap, and one small area inside of a town (as a submap). I was just wondering if that was overstepping the bounds of what is considered acceptable?
That's all. Thanks.

Pleased to see you're gonna enter :)

The submaps (both Field and Town) will probably be fine. We all judge it slightly differently, but the way I see it, if there's a reason the submap is there, and it doesn't take much more than a minute to explore, you're fine.

Okay cool. Yeah, it's kind of nice to have a little side project to work on since I'm taking a little break from my game right now.

Thanks :)

Cool, I like the idea of a contest. I'd like to try provided I manage to get a max drive and finish the map on time.

Just in case anyone didn't notice, the Deadline has been extended by six days, and we are now allowing you to submit your Map by mail, so it's no longer a problem if you don't have a Max Drive. Click here (http://www.pavilionboards.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16172) for more information on this.

It's absolutely good experience! :) Good publicity, too. And we're very glad that you'll be entering.

Try to make it in by the deadline, though if it's submitted within a few hours after the deadline I think we will forgive it.

Just make something you think is cool (and follow the general rules) and it will come out very well, I'm sure.

Finally, please let me know, are you going to submit it via email (using your Max Drive) or through snail mail?

With about 24 hours left until the end of this contest, here's what we have from everybody.

RECEIVED MAPS FROM
Lausen: 2 maps
Irate Giraffe: 1 map
Pagerron: 1 map

EXPECTING TO POSSIBLY RECEIVE FROM
Sleepywolf
Stoopiddood9
Red Dragon (file or video)

If a file is submitted or mailed after the deadline, it will be up to the individual judges to accept or deny. If it's less than a day, you should be fine. Past that, you're on dicey ground. At any rate, please try to respect the deadline.

We're hoping to see the amazing stuff you're capable of putting together! Once more, best of luck.

More details about the judging timeframe, etc., will come on Monday, once we've received all the submissions.

I received the submission. Thanks for entering. It does seem a little weird that there are two max files in the email (one is ~14K and the other is ~800K), but we'll figure out which one to use and let you know if there are any problems.

The deadline has passed.

We have received a total of five maps from four creators, and we're stoked about getting to play them:

Land of Chaos by Lausen
Nalzdia by Lausen
Sakura Lake by Sleepywolf
Summer's Coast by Irate Giraffe
Test Facility by Pagerron

Each Contest Judge will play the maps, each in a different order. We will discuss them--for convenience as well as fairness (to make sure no one missed anything that should have been patently obvious). If there are any problems with the game files themselves (e.g., corrupted data; won't uncrush), we will let the creator know and work it out together. We won't deduct any points for this type of problem.

We are hoping to complete the judging and post the Reviews on Monday, March 10. Alongside the reviews will be each Map's scores, screenshots of the map, and (unless the creator asks us not to post this) the file itself, so you can actually experience the map yourself.

Prizes will be announced alongside the reviews, and will be distributed as soon as possible.

ALL CONTEST ENTRANTS: PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU DO NOT WANT YOUR MAP FILE TO BE POSTED. IF YOU DO NOT SAY ANYTHING, WE WILL ASSUME IT IS OK TO POST YOUR MAP FILE ALONGSIDE YOUR REVIEW.

We're looking forward to having some great maps on display two weeks from now, as a source of enjoyment and inspiration for the RPG Maker Community!

7 more days until the expected finishing of the contest! Once you upload all the maps to the pavilion, and everyone plays them, do you think it would raise some map-making inspiration, and we could possibly have another 'field of dreams' contest in the future? You could even make a 'dungeon of dreams' or a 'town of dreams' :)

JPS

I'm thinking of hosting a "Dungeon of Dreams" or something similarly-named soon after this one gets done.

Maybe before, towns dont usually take a lot of effort to make...well, not as much as a field or dungeon normally would...

CONTEST UPDATE

Just wanted to quickly give you guys an update on the judging. We're all playing the maps in a different order for fairness, and I believe we've all played some--but not all--of the maps so far.

Personally, so far I've played Pagerron's "Test Facility" and Irate Giraffe's "Summer's Coast." I don't want to say anything that will bias the other judges but I do want to say that I am pleased with what I've seen so far. I want to get to the other three maps tonight--but it's taking 30-60 minutes to even load each map, thanks to my MAX Drive's DREs.

So anyway, although we expect to have played every map before the "judging deadline," we haven't gotten the chance to talk to make sure we haven't missed anything--so the results MAY be pushed back a few days. I'll let you know if that's the case.

sleepywolf
03-10-2008, 12:18 AM
Although I am anxious to see the results and other maps, please take your time and don't rush the judging!

Wavelength
03-10-2008, 07:04 AM
We apologize, but we'll need a few more days to complete the judging.

One map didn't make it to some judges (I'll handle this, no need to re-send), Obi needs to fix a bit of equipment before he can take the screenshots, and we're all finding details that others missed, so some maps are going to need a "second run."

Again, no promises, but we'll make our best effort to have the complete reviews and game files up by Thursday, March 13th.

I know that waiting can be the hardest part--so for all contest entrants, if you want to whet your appetite, you may ask me (starting tonight) by PM for your map's (and only your map's) initial review and scores from me (as one out of three contest judges), and I will send them to you. You must keep them confidential. The review and scores are subject to change slightly, based on new things I might find in your map, or changes in the way we handle the Technical category. Other judges may make this offer if they wish to.

Wavelength
03-16-2008, 03:20 AM
We had a couple of technical problems with the screenshots, which were my fault for originally hosting them on Geocities, and which are the reason we didn't go live with the reviews on Friday morning.

But we'll almost definitely have the results up tomorrow, and I feel that our reviews and screenies definitely do justice to the hard work that was put into each map.

Two people have already found out their rank (by virtue of seeing the thread in the Advisory Forum, or by asking), and two people haven't. To me, that's endlessly entertaining, for some reason.

Win or lose, I really hope everyone enjoyed this contest. If so, we'll try to hold more contests like it in the future.

I just finished playing through all of the maps, and wow! I had no idea you could do some of that stuff! I never knew you could 'levitate' a character (like in the test facility) or I never knew you could put objects floating in the air (alot of the maps had this). The whole finale to the Land of Chaos made my jaw drop! It's really spectacular!(and I'm suprised it didn't even lag around that part!) Great job, guys! I don't think I deserve 3rd place in this contest, but thank you, still!

Thanks sleepy. I'll be playing all of the maps on friday. I still have been trying to figure out how you could made a person float like in the screen. I'm excited to actually see it in action.

Also I just wanted to say I really enjoyed this contest. It was a nice break from my game.
