    Advance Wars: Day of Ruin

I just picked this game up, and the little bit I've played is refreshing. The mature changes are a great fit with the previously kid-ish titles in the series. Also, they took the teeth out of CO Powers, throwing a great deal more strategy into the mix.

Has anyone else got this? We should wi-fi it up. <3

Let me be a bit more detailed now that I've played a significant ammount.

The plot isn't AMAZING. But, if nothing else, it takes itself seriously. In any case, it's miles above the infuriating Advance Wars previous "storylines" that were just self-pardoying and annoying. I don't want to hit the main character, and while the other characters don't really stand out, they don't get on your nerves.

So without a bad storyline to drag it down, how does the gameplay fare? It's not a radical difference, but there are some new units. The Anti-Tank, an indirect combat unit that can counterattack adjacent, and the Flare, which clears up Fog of War with it's weapon, are two cool ones. Really, though, the best touch is the changes the interface has made in accordance with the new theme. Instead of soliders jumping up and down, it's a neat looking gauge (well, seeing as motorcycles can capture, jumping isn't really an option.) Gone are the old bright solid colors, replaced by a more subduded scheme easier on the eyes. Especially with the unit colors - you'd be amazed how much better the team colors looked in their dark incarnations.

Especially with online battle and map-sharing, this is something that every Advance Wars fan needs. If you've never played, but enjoy games like Fire Emblem (and were perhaps scared off by the kiddish color scheme) then this is definantly the time to jump in. But they don't try to demolish a good system, so if you don't like the game play this isn't a radical change. It's basically a thematic upgrade long overdue for fans who played through the older games and had to deal with Andy and *shudder* Jake.

Seriously, though, Pavilion Advance Wars tourney NEEDS TO HAPPEN. I'm looking at you gray.
