    Do people respect their parents?

Sometimes it feels like I'm in the minority.

My parents like to see me once a week and/or have me visit once a week. They also make many demands of me...like they were one of the main reasons I bought the condo I did and took their advice on what car I should get. I know this seems insane to most people, but I'm very greatful for what they gave me...they brought me up right and gave me a college education for free. I know a lot of people get that, but it seems the attitude I see often is "**** them, I'm an adult now!" I understand this view, but on the flip side, being a good son and showing some respect and gratitude makes me feel like I'm in the minority when I talk to people about the relationship between me and my parents.

    ...oh well, whatever.

I love my parents and respect them as much as I can, but that doesn't mean they're always right and I should listen to them all the time. Doesn't sound like obeying every demand your parents make is working out for you.

            My parents amaze me.

They moved all the way across the country and got married right away, my dad got a job as an apprentice in the pulp and paper mill, and they lived in a trailer park. Withing a month of the honeymoon, my mom got pregnant, and on December 20th, the welcomed my oldest sister.

11 days later, on New Year's Eve, my dad was laid off.

He spent that winter shoveling any and every house in that trailer park to make money to support his family.

At the end of the summer, they hired him back. He worked so hard to prove to his tough father in law that he could take care of his wife.

They raised 4 daughters, and all in all, we are a good bunch.

            I love them!

I respect my mom, I appreciate my dad, but most of all I respect my grandparents.

Maybe I shouldn't take advice from my thrice married mother on relationships. Probably shouldn't take any financial, marital, has-any-effect-on-my-life advice from my father. Not to say they're not good people or that they don't know more than me, it's just that my dad still just sits in his little room and smokes pot all day. In fact, it was somewhat shy of a miracle he'd decided to get a job after I left for college. Last time he had a job he quit when he used the scrap metal to weld himself a sweet bong. I didn't even believe it at first.

I love both my parents in a non-descript, instinctive kind of way. I can't really respect either of them. Not for nothing, simple fact is them being my parents doesn't change the fact that neither of them is actually a good person. They could be worse though.

Re: Do people respect their parents?

I love both my parents with all my heart. My mom is just the most wonderful person in the world, and my dad tries his best too, but I do have a lot of disagreements with him... I'm not sure how much respect I have for him, but I usually do respect him... definitely a difference there, right?

As I go to school five hours from where they (we?) live, I only get to see my parents about five times a year (including a nice expanse of three weeks for Winter Break and 12 weeks for Summer Break until this past one where I had to spend it in NYC) but we do talk on the phone most days. I really wonder what that's gonna be like if I move far away from here after college.

I...don't really know if you're in the majority or the minority or what. Growing up, I thought my family was dysfunctional, but I've gotten more intimate views of a lot of other families since, and it seems there's always a little bit of frustration between children trying to "grow up" and parents trying to keep their children "under their thumb" or at least guide them to places the kid might not want to go. So it's been kind of liberating to know that it's all normal, it's all natural, and that it's OK to have some issues if the love is still there.
