Re: ps3 or 360
this is a topic I thought about for a while, in the end it depends on the kind of games you want and wich system has mor eof them. Though since I like RPGs, it was tough either way, for now I got a 360 for oblivian, blue dragon, halo 3, and Guitar Hero, I will Also get A PS3 eventually for things like FFXIII and others because sony has come out with many good rpgs, and hopefully still will.Lunchbox

Re: ps3 or 360
Overall, my vote goes to the 360. Both systems have a lot of the same games, so it's mainly how you want online gaming to be like.
360: Pay for online multiplayer gaming, but the service is great (still a bit slow because of all the new 360 owners logging in). Hundreds of downloads, plenty of demos, great messaging and friend service. And for games that need updates, it gives you the option of downloading them when you start up a game. Though the consoles break down a lot for most people. Rep system lets you find more games with people you like, and avoid games from people you don't like. Also a Mute option for annoying people so you don't have to listen to them. Can view/create mesages and send voice chat invites to people during games (even when you're both playing different games) and while watching movies.
PS3: Free online gaming, but has only a few downloadable content. PS3 system updates seem more frequent, console never had any hardware issues yet for me, plus it has the blue ray player if you're thinking of getting HD movies. Can't view/create messages during games or movies (I'm hoping they fix this). Voice/video chatting for up to 6 people at a time I think. PS1 downloads are a nice addition.

Re: ps3 or 360
Ive only got a 360, but I love it. I may be biased but Id go with the 360. Lots of games out for PS3 are also out on the 360, and to me the 360 has the better choice of console exclusives. Also apparently from almost everybody I talk to it has the superior online support/gaming/messaging stuff. And it may be like $50 a year for live, but that comes down to like what, $4 a month? Only little kids mowing lawns and buying candy cant afford that.
Can PS3s even play music over your games? Ive always wondered this, becasue its freaking awsome to play your favorite games with your favorite music playing at the same time. Slaughtering hordes of zombies in Dead Rising with Ode to Joy kicks ass.

Re: ps3 or 360
I've been going back and forth with this too. If you're willing to go without PS2 BC the PS3 is down to $400 now so price isn't an issue. The $50/yr for Live is annoying but it's well worth it. Meanwhile Sony is constantly improving their service and it could match or better Live in time. PS3 has more non-game functions: web browsing, Blu-Ray, Linux, plus some cool PSP connectivity.
Gameswise they both win in different categories. My favorite genre is Action/Adventure which PS3 wins with MGS4, Heavenly Sword, God of War, Uncharted, etc. My second is RPGs which surprisingly 360 is ahead with JRPGs like Lost Odyssey and Infinite Undiscovery as well as the westerns Mass Effect, Fable 2. If you're into shooters 360 wins another category. Everything else they're pretty even.I want that Mulan McNugget sauce, Morty!

Re: ps3 or 360
I just purchased a PS3 after having had my 360 since last August. If you are planning on going online with your system, then the 360 is the way to go. Even with it being free, the PSN is kinda lacking. The game store for the downloads is not as intuitive and user-friendly as Xbox's Marketplace is. The layout of the "desktop" (The crossbar or whatever) is nice, though. Gamewise, IMHO, the PS3 at this point is seriously lacking, both with retail games and with their version of Live Arcade games. Sure, there are some good ones (I bought Everyday Shooter and flOw last night), but a quick perusal of Gamespot tells me that most of their downloadable games were rated in the 4.5 to 6.5 out of ten range, and there are WAY fewer than there are on Live Arcade.
The only reason I bought mine now (contrary to what Mora is saying above) is that Sam's Club still had about 4-5 of the 60 gig versions left even though they've been out of production since September (or thereabouts) of last year. I did not want a 40 or 80 gig "gimped" system, so I bought the 60 gig now because it was available, and I look at it as an investment for the future (I'm really holding out for Home and LittleBigPlanet). Plus, I just need to find my receipt, make a copy, print the rebate form available online, and I get 5 free Blu-Ray movies (although the choices leave a bit to be desired).
So, yeah...my advice is, if you can still find a 60 gig by some miracle, buy it now. If not, invest your money into a 360.
(I'm typing this from my PS3 right now, actually)
