    Man on a Mission

    Hi, Guys;

Hope all is well with everyone. That everyone is surrounded by an aura of peace and good health.

I haven't posted much recently 'cause my mission has me working to acquire whatever data and info I can get my fat fingers on, data and info that will help me make my decision on which of the 3 Playstation RPG Makers to start creating my demo with.

When joining the pav and initially introducing myself I stated I had figured it be best for me to go with RPG Maker for doing my game creations.

But since then, I have found it very hard for acquiring the necessary data I need to begin creating with RPG Maker.

So I have been reading whatever I can get my hands on about RPG Maker 2 & RPG Maker 3.

Documentation-wise RPG Maker 2 offers more, with its Prima Guide and its User Manual.

When it comes to learning for me I need to read and the easiest method for me to read is from my pc monitor. So I have been scanning in each page of the Prima Guide for RPGM2 to my pc.

Next I will scan into my pc the RPGM2 User Manual.

I do this with most of the User Manuals when playing RPGs.

I have also downloaded ALL the reviews for each of the 3 Playstation Makers from gamefaqs.

Man I am impressed with the tidbits and incite I have gained from reading these reviews.

Because I can not find an equal amount of step by step info and other documentation for RPG Maker and RPG Maker 3, the most logical package for me to go with looks like it will have to be RPGM2.

That is the conclusion it seems I have been drawn to accept.

Anyway, hope you are all doing well, as I said above. Also I thank you all again for the warm welcome you bequeathed me with when I first signed on here at the pav.

I ask again for any and all help from anyone who can help me get established with any of these 3 tools for creating my first demo.

    Cordially,
    the newbie, phatgamer

I don't know anything about 1 or 2 other then they are a lot harder then 3. And you happen to pic 2 witch is the hardest. I'm sure that's why you have found more about it because well there's just a lot more to it. 3 doesn't really require any huge guide to learn how to use it though it is more limited.

Either way I hope you enjoy learning.

Yes 3 is overly limited and that can become such a big nuisance. I think 2 is a good choice. Oh and you can also hook up a keyboard. That makes it worthwhile right there.

        lil das,

further research tells me that as a NEWBIE, total beginner, my best choice may be RPGM 3.

Though RPGMaker is more balanced and an overall good thing, the lack of documentation and its outdatedness hurt it, from my perspective.

RPGM2 has alot of power and creativity is yours to behold, but presently it seems it might be beyond my focusing abilities.

          Lausen,

thanks for always being around; I may be corresponding with you via private messaging if that would be okay with you. The reason is that it looks like I will go with RPGM3 as a starting point for creating my demo.

I will probably have questions as they relate to RPGMaker 3.

Who knows, maybe down the line we could both make an attempt with creating a game with RPGMaker 2, as both of us get more experienced.

Are there any rumors of AGETEC coming out with an RPGM4 ?

            No, not even a rumour.

But there is a long thread of ideas around what some of us would like to see in an RM4.

Wavelength made a pretty awesome list, and I added a few things that I thought should be in there as well. You'll find the merged list (Wavelength and my own) a few posts down on this page.

My advice would be to go ahead and use 3, and once you've gotten the hang of that, branch off into the others if you want to. They're all great, it's just a matter of personal taste. People say that 3 is more limited than the other 2, and in a way it is, but it's still extremely powerful. I did a lot with it when I made Tree of life, and I still feel like I haven't found everything 3 is capable of. Plus the graphics of 3 are 3D and more realistic than 2, which for me lends itself to a more immersive gameplay experience.

You like making custom sprites? Use 1. Visually it's probably the most customizable, followed quickly by 2, and then 3.

Yeah you can PM me anytime you need help. I don't think you can stump me too badly with any question conserning to 3. And I actually look for the other makers every time I go to GameStop or something. Thats where I found 3. If I find a copy I'd be willing to learn with you considering it's supposed to be much harder.

I must say that I'm really glad that you chose to use 3 for your first game. That's a biased opinion of course. I've used 2 (especially to play games made by others) and 1 (made a couple of short games). I just love the way that the graphics look on 3. A very good game can be made with it, too, if you make the time for it.

See you on the boards then. Ask away! There are lots of people who'd be willing to help.

Maybe I will be contacting you for help when I get ready to start mey demo.

For a beginner RPGM3 is the only way to go.

It seems that RPGMaker is the most balanced and RPGM2 is the most powerful.

I wanted to start with RPGMaker but could find no documentation to help get me started.

How involved is RPGMaker, compared, say, to RPGM2 ?

Yes, Lausen, we will learn it together.

But for now we will work with RPGM3.

                          Obright,

thanks for the encouragement. I would like to attempt to work with 3 and eventually getting around to the other 2.

Is it true that RPGM 4 is out in Japan ?

I thought you could use the usb keyboard with both 2 and 3.

                            Is this the case ?

                              Hey phatgamer

Yes, you can definitely use a USB keyboard for both RPG Maker 2 and RPG Maker 3, and I strongly recommend it.

The numbering system that is used in Japan is different from the numbers here in the U.S., so what you've heard of as an "RPG Maker 4" is really not what you think at all.

RPG Maker (in my experience anyway) is much easier to deal with than RPG Maker 2. Also, I'm a sucker for that old school feel sometimes.

(Oh, and just so you know, sometimes people on boards like this look down on multiple posts in a row so soon after one another. You can address a variety of people in one post by simply quoting each person and writing a response below each quote)
