    I bought an electric guitar

and its my first time ever playing one...Ive always wanted to learn and I had some extra $$ left over.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get started? I can play a few intros(like 1 or 2) but I have a problem with finger placement...is there any sites with tutorials for playing/placement/etc... or any books anyone suggests investing in?

I dont even know how many musicians are in here...

EDIT:I didnt even put elec. guitar in the poll *rolls eyes* is there a way to edit a poll? If not put elec. guitar as acoustic...or if an admin can edit polls please add elec

I recently got an acoustic i'm learning to play. Just reading the Beginners book I bought for it so I dont have anything to recommend.

The important thing is that I look sexy holding it.

I play guitar, both acoustic and electric, though I'm a bigger fan of electric. I don't own my own electric yet, but I should get my Epiphone SG by Wednesday, and I'm stoked. I've been playing for about 4 or 5 months now, though I'm not as good as one would think. School has hindered me from playing as much as I would like, but I'm gonna spend more time playing this semester. Along with playing guitar, I also try to do some vocal work.

pretty sure the starcraft battlenet screen more than destroys any attraction to women in that picture.

the best and easiest (albeit most expensive) way to learn guitar is to get a private teacher. then practice what they tell you. a lot. and don't stop, even if you get discouraged or bored. you can always find something to play, try to work on things you enjoy to get you motivated.

I've played electric for about four years, but I played violin before that so it wasn't out of my skill range.

I don't take lessons. I'm learning skills on my own and just learning how to play songs. Granted it's going to stifle my learning process, but I don't really care. I can't afford lessons and some of the best guitarists are self taught.

I play bass. I'm ok, and I'm sure if I had a private teach he would probably yell at me a lot on form. Unfortunately I'm still music theory retarded, but someday I'll sit down and learn it, until then it's scouring the net for tabs and just messing around until it sounds decent.

Re: I bought an electric guitar

My roomate has a bass guitar and an electric. He ****ing sucks at playing both, and hes been at it for years apparently. I also think hes a mix of retarded/idiot/insane and he talks to himself and the TV, so that might be why.

Every song he plays, he hits all the strings with each pass, instead of plucking out at the individual strings to get certain notes. When he does pluck them out like your supposed to, he cant get anything right. So either way, its ****ing painful to listen to him play.

Ive considered buying a ukulele, and learning how to play it just for the WTF value. It would be awsome. Plus I could show up my roomate in about 2 months of practise.

i use to fart about on my buddies bass guitar but i sucked major and i didnt have the fingers or enough time with the instrument to learn anything beyond random jam sound a la painful.

i did a small stint as a band member for school in grade 9 as a percussionist but i pretty much failed that because i really didnt like making music or to be more accurate, noise.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

practice scales and chords (using the right fingers and ****) over and over and over and over and soak up as much theory as you can. play songs you like too, because that can be fun.

if you can, get lessons. ive never had guitar lessons, but i used to play saxophone and seriously lessons from a good instructor will help you out so much that its definitely worth the money if you really want to learn how to play and improve.

Re: I bought an electric guitar

                          I play guitar....in Rock Band.

Although, I used to have a whole electronic music setup in my basement (a few keyboards, a sampler, an analogue drum machine, a sequencer, and a synth module).

Therefore, I chose "other," as you apparently think playing electronic instruments does not count as "playing an instrument"....

Also, where's the poll choices for sitar, tabla, cowbell, tambourine, etc? You need to make better polls, JPS.

Iron Man without the solo is a good song to work with, as is Heart Shaped Box. Here's a list of songs that I play (some songs are without solos because they're beyond my skill level):

                            -Iron Man (Black Sabbath)
                            -War Pigs (Black Sabbath)
                            -Heart Shaped Box (Nirvana)
                            -Chapter Four (Avenged Sevenfold)
                            -Clairvoyant Disease (Avenged Sevenfold)
                            -Fat Lip (Sum 41)
                            -When September Ends (Green Day)

Those are what I try to play on a regular basis. I try to learn other songs periodically, but really recommend Iron Man and Heart Shaped Box if you're into ****in around.

My roommate owns a Chet Atkins, a Gretsch, some other kind of electric guitar, an acoustic guitar, a bass guitar and a banjo. I'm allowed to play all of them, but I'm only a fledgling. I'm pretty incapable of teaching myself, and I can only learn when I attempt to play Guster songs along with him.

We own an acoustic guitar back home, but its strings are too tough for me and my dainty fingers.
