What? You guys didn't know that? Most of the stories Disney rips off were moral tales penned to scare children into behaving.

Another fun fact: The stories of Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel both originally had not ended well for their protagonists. You'll note that a "brave hunter" always saves them in the end. It is just that, as times changed and people turned into pansies, that the "brave hunter" was added half-assedly into the stories.

I knew about the Sleeping Beauty part.

I also heard that in one of the Cinderella tales, the stepmother cuts off part of one of the stepsister's feet in order to make it fit in the slipper.

wow i prefer the tame versions more. i guess they liked to do their sisters back then and dream up weird punishments in hopes of scaring children or being the most cruel.

some of those are just "wow."

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

Ya a short story version depicts that.

incest is the best put your sister to the test.

people turning into pansies doesnt really have anything to do with it. social norms change and in order to keep the stories relevant (and appropriate) changes had to be made to edit out largely unnecessary parts.

i didnt really find the article very interesting, maybe because i already knew and read most of the original stories, but probably because its a lot like pointing towards a very large number of things that happened in 1000's of years ago and comparing it to the world and how we perceive it today. i mean, i already feel like i live in a world where what i ate for breakfast yesterday loses its relevance as each day passes, so why even bother?

You are wrong on many accounts. The way we, as a species, think does not change. We only WANT to believe that such issues of the past are no longer relevant. In truth, society can change and hide the truth, but is perception that is ultimately irrelevant.

Was that just useless psychobable...or did I just totally blow your ****ing MIND!?

The stories when they were first thought up was done by storytellers, using their creative mind to keep audiences of all ages entertained. As the years went by and storytellers ultimately died out, the stories were toned down and given a cleaner version so that parents could pass it on to their children.

We as a society evolve over time, the way we think, the way we act, and the way we percieve things evolves, it is the result of thousands of years of learning from our own mistakes that causes us to change.

And no Ivan, you didnt blow anyones mind, because you stating that our way of thinking has not changed for thousands of years is as irrevalent as the point you were trying to make.

Well, perhaps I worded that incorrectly. What I meant was that though our perceptions and ideas change (as result of society changing) our nature (as a whole) does not. So our perceptions of the world are ultimately irrelevant, and can only lead to a LACK of understanding of our nature.

And looking at History, I see no evidence that we actually learn from our mistakes. Individuals, perhaps, but not in general. We still do the same damn things we've always done, just with bigger toys.

are you talking about the methods from which we think? the exercise of thinking hasnt changed, but the overall mode of thought has.

and besides that, im not necessarily talking about the change of thought as much as the changes in social norms and social values. my perception of incest, as well as societies, is a world apart from the perception of incest that we garner from ancient sumerian texts for example. our perceptions towards manboylove and homosexuality is very far from the way the ancient greeks did. etc.

I'm an actor. If I didn't have something of an ego I wouldn't get parts.

Also, I'm not half an egomaniac in real life as I am on the net. Normally, I keep to myself unless I feel as though I must speak/act.
