Okay, before you start throwing things at me, I'm just throwing ideas around when I'm not working on my real project--and I never get to work on it like I'd like to
I actually think a game based off of the world of Harry Potter would be entirely possible. As I've said, it is based on the WORLD of Harry Potter, perhaps maybe 5 or 6 years after the end of Deathly Hallows (19 years later epilogue excluded).
It would center mostly around one area (Hogwarts castle), and because of that I would be able to have lot's of events. You'll start out as an eleven year old student (you choose the gender, and the name) and the game will progress through the 7 years (with each year adding on with the file switching trick, so as to shorten the development times with each installment). Each installment will be fairly short, but chock full of things to do in a game that will be a mixture of Bully and Final Fantasy but with Harry Potter trappings.
You'll attend class (This is how you will learn spells and processes for making the potions you will need for your adventures on your own) and you can buy ingredients for potions at Hogsmeade (only available at year 3, so there will be new things to do in each year) or steal them from the potionmaster's stores (you'll get detention if you get caught though).
Certain quests will not be available depending on how you go about things (making a "T" in Charms? You probably won't learn a powerful enough unlocking spell to open a door to a secret chamber)
I'll avoid the ethical choices featured in my (unfinished) first game until later--except for the beginning. In the first part of the game, you'll play as an experienced Auror character against a powerful enemy (this will also set up the plot of the game). The ethical choices made here will affect what house you get into when you go to school as your own character.
And yes, there will be summons in the form of Patronuses (usable at the beginning of the game, but won't become available until year three or four or five--depending on how well you do in Defense Against the Dark Arts). These should be cool, provided people don't harp on the fact that they are not completely white (every animal character has a white color scheme, so it works).
Some spells learned will be combat spells selectable in your skill list, others will be used to solve puzzles, and some will be both. Ones like the Patronus charm or the Silencing charm will probably be usable by the game asking if you want to use it before a fight.
And don't expect Hogwarts to be one big dungeon. Were I to make this game, it would be a huge castle made up of dungeons, buildings, towers, and rooms linked together by events. I can use a town and building objects to accurately create the Great Hall with a ceiling that reflects the weather outside and everything.
If I did make this game, I would have to include these following areas:
*Streets of London (where the prologue will take place).
*The Leaky Couldron (got to go through here to reach Diagon Alley)
*Diagon Alley (You'll have to buy things before you can go to school, but what other surprises await you?)
*Gringotts (Maybe...)
*The Ministry of Magic (Again, maybe...)
*Hogwarts (Duh!)
*Hogsmeade (Other than bartering things off of your classmates, how else are you going to buy stuff?)
*Hogwarts Grounds (Again, duh!)
*Forbidden Forrest (Encounter all manner of Centaur and other fantastical beasts--and this is where to find them)
*Whomping Willow and the Shrieking Shack (Hell, why not?)
Again, just bouncing and idea around. This is what I've got after ten minutes of it just coming to me as I paced the floor last night. I would like to point out, however, that--were I to make this game--this is NOT in essence, a 7-part game (that would be lame) this is essentially ONE game with periodic content added (though some stuff will have to be removed in order for you to play the new stuff with the data switching trick).
Again, just ideas that I had to write down somewhere for someone to see. If anything, just so maybe I'll stop thinking about it now.
