Does it let you get into safe mode?

Do a memory test (the Ubuntu livecd has a memory test option if you can find a way to download and burn it).

Also, unplug all external devices and restart. It may be a driver issue. If that doesn't work, disconnect all devices (CD Rom Drive(s), PCI cards, hard drives other than the main one, etc) so that only the devices that are required for your computer to work (main hard drive, video card, etc) are connected. Reconnect each device one by one until you make the problem happen again. You should be able to figure out which device it is, then uninstall whatever driver for that device and try again.

Most of the time it means the memory is bad, a device is bad, however 90% of the time its a driver, in my experiences.

Still cant get into safe mode. I pick start normaly, it goes to the WinXP loading screen, but bluescreens partway through saying to check my drivers like you said.

Cant check them if I keep getting taken back to the safemode menu every time.

Did you remove all devices like I said? Keep only your video card (unless you have an onboard video card) and remove your mouse, keep your keyboard, and remove everything else.

With everything removed, does it boot?

Post back and let me know, we'll take this one step at a time until we resolve it.

A restore wouldn't be so bad. I know a way where you can get your documents safely off your hard drive, back them up and restore Windows. Don't restore Windows without a way of backing up your important files, it can be done. (And it's not too hard, either).

The hard drive is being recognized without issues. I won't rule out a virus though, but it's too easy of a diagnosis.

His problem doesn't have anything to do with the boot.ini file, no offense. (I appreciate the effort though, but lets not confuse him).

The next thing you need to try is a memory test. On a different computer (if one is available), download the Ubuntu LiveCD from here (Don't worry, we're not installing Ubuntu, however the live cd features a memory test that won't harm the files on your computer and it also features ways of getting your old files back):

                          http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

If you know how to burn ISO files, create a CD with the downloaded file, then reboot. One of the options is a memory test. Choose it. Let it run for 5 minutes to a half hour, whatever you have time for. Basically if you don't see red anywhere on the screen, you're good. After that let me know how everything goes.

Okay, about my reply regarding the memory test, do that last, do this now (if you are running Windows XP). This will more than likely fix the problem, if it doesn't, then the problem is probably your memory. You will not lose your important files if you follow these instructions exactly. However, you will lose all of your Windows updates and service packs, and you will need the Windows CD. (If you don't have one, you'll have to download the Ubuntu live cd to backup your files, I can send you one if you don't have access to burn it).

Here is the text if it's too hard to read that link on your PSP:

How do you perform a reinstallation of Windows XP, sometimes called a repair installation?

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

                            1.

When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

                            2.

Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

                            3.

Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

                            4.

In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

                            5.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

                            6.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.
When you are done with all that, and after your computer is back working, run Windows Update and install updates over and over until there are none left to install.

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (if you are running XP).

To be safe, just in case you have a virus (not likely, but possible) run an antivirus program after your computer is back working. If you don't have Antivirus, you can get a free one here:

I dont have a windows CD, so ill try to burn that ubuntu thing. Do I need to do anything special to make it work at my start up safemode screen, or does it work if I just put it straight onto a disc?

And when my files are backed up by Ubuntu, they are still on my PC right? I dont need an external drive or anything?

Im going to be at my parents place for xmas, so i can use their PC to help get the stuff I need.
