Back in October, Insomniac's Ryan Schneider made some lighthearted comments about Ratchet & Clank being Miyamoto's inspiration for Mario Galaxy. We did a lighthearted post on it. Sadly, many Nintendo (and Insomniac) fans took it a little too seriously, and made a big hullabaloo out of the whole thing. Indeed, it was such a hullabaloo that when they got the chance to interview Miyamoto, the UK's Official Nintendo Magazine decided to ask him whether or not he'd really based Galaxy's spherical worlds on those found in Ratchet & Clank. His response?
It's not an idea we got from anywhere else. I'm sorry but I have to admit that I've never seen the game in question. Is it a PC game?
Re: Miyamoto to Insomniac: What's Rachet and Clank?
meh. i don't expect an artist to be running around looking at everyone elses art. it seems odd at first, but it makes sense that the same could be true for video game people.

Picasso once said “Good artists copy; great artists steal.” The best artists aren't the ones that necessarily start a new "school" or style of art, but the ones that take established artwork, copy it, and add a dash of their own flavor in to create something unique. Same thing applies to videogames. Half-Life was as simple as combining action elements from Doom with story telling elements from adventure games. It's still a first-person shooter, but few games before Half-Life* actually had a storyline outside of a one paragraph splash screen.
*System Shock was there. System Shock was always there.
I suspect BILLIONS OF OTHERS haven't either.
I agree with this statement. I'm sure the billions of people who don't own a PS2 even know what Ratchet and Clank is.
