Activision says **** off, PS3 fans! (Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band issue)

I love Harmonix. They made a music game I love, and they're even making patches so their competitor's guitar controllers work on Rock Band for the PS3 (works just fine on the 360 version, though). But no surprise, Activision isn't too happy about people buying their guitars and possibly not buy their game.

Harmonix: Activision squashes Rock Band patch
Developer of rhythm game claims to have resolved compatibility issues with PS3 Guitar Hero controller, but can't release update due to rival publisher's objection.

Megadeth's Dave Mustaine and Metallica, Oasis and Blur, Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., Pete Townshend and his hearing. The music world has seen its share of feuds over the years, and with the music genre taking off in gaming, it's about time for interactive digital entertainment to get its own high-profile beef.

Whether one refers to the feud as Activision-MTV, RedOctane-Harmonix, or Guitar Hero-Rock Band, two of the top toy-guitar game makers are butting heads about compatibility issues. After Harmonix revealed Rock Band to the world earlier this year, it claimed it supported open hardware standards, which meant the developers would do what they could to make Rock Band instruments work with other music games on the market, and vice versa.

But when Rock Band arrived on the PlayStation 3, gamers who purchased Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on Sony's system found that the included Les Paul controller would not work with Harmonix's game. Harmonix said it was working on a fix for the issue, and today the developer announced that it had successfully created a software patch that would do just that and that it had finished work on the patch two weeks ago.

As for why PS3 Rock Band owners can't rock out with the Guitar Hero III controllers at the moment, Harmonix also went public with a bit of backroom squabbling that has kept the patch tied up. An excerpt from the Harmonix statement follows:

"Two weeks ago, Harmonix created a software patch for the Sony PlayStation 3 version of Rock Band that allowed for guitar compatibility and support for third party peripherals, including enabling use of Activision's Guitar Hero III controller with Rock Band. The compatibility patch was submitted, approved and had been scheduled for release by Sony on Tuesday, December 4. Unfortunately, Activision objected to the release of the compatibility patch. The patch remains with Sony, but we have been told that it will unfortunately not be released due to Activision's continued objection. [emphasis added]

"As is the case with the Microsoft Xbox 360, we believe that Sony PlayStation 3 users should be able to use the peripheral of their choice with Rock Band. We sincerely hope that Activision will reverse its decision and allow release of the compatibility patch and further, that Activision will allow Guitar Hero III to support Rock Band guitar controllers as well. We welcome all third party developers who wish to support our controllers and will provide any required support in order for them to do so.

"We believe that when consumers have choice, everyone wins. Harmonix and MTV Games hope that Activision and others in the industry will also adopt this philosophy."

As of press time, Activision and RedOctane representatives had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.
It's weird that that the guitars which seem to act like regular controllers to me have compatibility issues. I even tried playing Castlevania Symphony of The Night with the GH2 controller on my 360, and I did "ok".

And why does the 360 versions of the guitars work with both games, but not the PS3? Seems odd.

I'm on activision's side. if they want to block a competing company from using their guitar, they should be able to.

Even though if it weren't for Harmonix they wouldn't even have the guitar or the game?

It's not like a 3rd party controller though.

But yeah it's like Microsoft making the Wii controller compatable with the 360 (or somthing).

I'm with TTC. Harmonix developed the franchise, the least they could do is be amicable.

Well, in any case, I'm sure Activision will get a lot of complaints from people anyway. Meanwhile, my cousin and I will jam to the games with our rival guitars on the 360.

Funny story. I just got my replacement guitar in the mail. 360 won't read game discs now.

Well, I mean Activision has a point and is also trying to protect their product from copyright infringement. It would be different if the two companies agreed, or there were official peripheral guitars ((like a PS3 official guitar or an X-box official guitar.))
But Activision made the guitar to be used and used only with the Guitar hero franchise. If they started letting other companies capitalize off their product, they wouldn't be able to compete with their own brand. MTV is taking that defensive posture because they know Activision is going to win that suit.

C'mon- the only reason to protect it is the same reason they wouldn't let EGM mention Rock Band in the same issue with GH3 (and EGM responded by not printing anything about GH3 that issue).

                    They're scared.

They probably shouldn't be. Rock Band is an amazing game, but with a price tag as high as it is, there is room for both to exist.
Took me 15 minutes to remember how to change my signature, and this is all I came up with.

I'm on the fence about this. I believe Activision has the right to protect their stuff, even though technically Harmonix came up with all of it. I guess the real issue is who holds the patent to the original guitar controller(And I know patents are tricky, I remember the lawsuit against Sony concerning the patent on force-feedback or whatever)?

The patent won't make much of a difference if they are still different controllers. MTV says they want to make their controllers compatible with Guitar Hero games ( so people who buy Rock band can just go out and buy the GH game.))

Activision is saying on order to play the GH game you need to buy thier official GH guitar. ((I.E. Pay them money.))

If they let things go, even if someone bought a GH guitar, that wouldn't mean they would go and buy the actual GH game. So they are protecting their sales.

From another standpoint though it could backfire, but if your going to pay money to buy Rockband and could use that guitar to play GH, chances are your not going to go and buy the GH Guitar.

((Or is it the other way around, hmmm confused? ))

Little does Acitivision realize, the Rock Band controllers suck.

Therefore, everyone who wants to play Rock Band will buy their guitars anyway. More money for them?

Why do you think it sucks? It's basically the same, but with a couple of extras.

The extra five fret buttons make it easier for people with smaller hands to play, and the extra switch (pick ups?) change the sound of the guitar to different styles.
