Oriontide: Forever In The Eternal Darkness Of The Nameless

My latest game. There's already been some talk about it in the Free Forum but I'm not sure what you do and don't know about it so this topic will include everything.

"Oriontide: Forever In The Eternal Darkness Of The Nameless" is a complete reboot of the game, started completely over from scratch. It's intent was for it to be the game it was always meant to be, to go according to the script.

Also, I came to a decision. No longer would I censor myself. With ALL of my games, I chose not to make the scenes in my scripts that were violent or contained language. With this game, it's completely uncensored and all those removed scenes are back.

This game is actually going to be updated soon, so if you want to do any concept art for it to be included in the game, feel free! "Version 2" of the game will contain several more scenes and dungeons, and features, and more stuff. Basically, think of an "extended edition".

    Here are the current features:

    * Custom sprites by Sniffy

    * Custom battle system (My first attempt, so go easy on me please, it's not the greatest and I know it)

    * Mercenary system (hire a mercenary to fight with you)

    * The main character is cursed and must reach his destination before it's too late. To make it more realistic, you are timed. The longer you wait, the more evil you become.

    * If you are too late, the game starts over with the same stats intact. Think of it as "Groundhogs day, RPG Style".

There's other stuff too. I hope that you guys like it. It's not the greatest game in the world, however I will be improving on it with another release, and input from people is what really makes the difference.

Here's a screenshot from the new game:

Here's a screenshot of the exact same scene from the old game (So you can see how far I've come):

Or like you took a page from the development of Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. --which isn't a bad thing. I loved that game.

Sweet, thanks! I'm going to be updating the game over the next few days or maybe a week, so you'll end up playing the latest version.

I have that game. I've tried to like it, but I can't for some reason. Maybe I need to give it another shot. My version of the "groundhogs day" thing isn't exactly the same thing, though. In the original version, Darin was still cursed and transforming into a being of darkness, but you could spend forever and it would not change. I wanted to make the transformation more realistic, so you actually have to get to the end before the transformation finalizes.

Breath of Fire V I think used more of a statistic approach, but I could be wrong, I haven't played but an hour of it. Maybe you should email me and let me know what you find redeeming about it so I'll know if I should give it another shot. I think one of the things that drove me nuts is the fact that the battles were so hard and took so long, but then again, I may just suck at it.

Thanks! As you can see the game desperately needed an update, the original didn't age too well, and so many scenes were cut because I didn't know how to incorporate them it was just silly.

It sounds like a fascinating game, especially the curse element, but I must ask: was that the best name you had in mind? What were the ones you passed up?

The development name was "Oriontide 2007". (I always give my games development names that always change). The first title I considered I think was just "Oriontide". I thought about "Oriontide: Revival" at one point, but I already released a game with the word Revival in the name, and that would have been a lame title.

I decided that instead of putting a word in the name to describe it, like 99.9% of all games out there, I wanted to do something different, and then I decided for a longer title that was vague rather than descriptive.

A little constructive criticism: there's a reason most games, movies, books, and so on have brief names. Very few long names can keep from being clunky and unnecessary, and I have to be honest, yours is definitely not one of them. I can understand not wanting to use Revival again, but how about something like Oriontide: The Nameless, cutting out the six other words in the moniker? In any case, there has to be some room for editing there, you should explore it.

Nah, I like the name as it is. Thanks though.

Wow, the detail in that screenshot is amazing. I'll be sure to download this baby once I'm on a computer that doesn't suck. What kind of combat is it, btw? Hack 'n slash?

Played some of the game. The battle system is wonky. I got in a fight with 4 skulls and before my turn came they killed me.

Turn based combat, with the player character wielding a gun.
