    Death Note in the news.

It's a pretty funny how they don't realize that the origin of the Death Note is from a freaking anime/manga.

Brings up some interesting issues, not the least of which is freedom of speech. While the kid didn't do anything that could actually hurt anyone, I can understand the school administrators getting a little freaked out about this. I think a few massacres have started with the perpetrator writing down the names of people they'd like to kill (a "hit list" of sorts).

So while this seems to be connected to the anime (which freakin' ROCKS, by the way) and thus an innocent--if slightly disturbing--flight of fancy... you never know exactly what that connection is. It could be that he wants to bring the actual effect of the Death Note by doing something violent. I think it's good that this is being investigated. Not completely sure a suspension is necessary, though it does make things easier.

Next, maybe we'll see a news report that some kid is suspended for making apples float in the air.

The whole zero tolerance thing just leads to another guilty until proven innocent situation. If a student writes, draws, or says anything that somebody even thinks is a threat they're already treated like they brought a weapon to school. Even if they manage to prove there was no actual intent to hurt anybody they're marked as somebody to "keep an eye on" and pretty much treated by faculty and other students like a ticking time bomb just for daring to express their thoughts. So to avoid these unwarranted consequences troubled students just keep their feelings bottled up completely which is actually far more dangerous.

for any feeling of protection you must give some of your freedom.

He's obviously using this kid as a decoy.
