    Favorite year of gaming ever?

While discussing the GTA and Metal Gear series in another thread, Magus made mention of 2001 being a great time in gaming with the release of both GTA 3 and MGS 2, which got me to thinking of how certain years can just be phenomenal for the industry while others just kinda pass by. So I thought I'd see what years had the best releases according to the Pavilion populace at large. Pondered doing it as a poll, but the industry has kinda been around a little bit too long for that to be a viable option, so you'll just have to answer in the archaic posting format.

For me, 2004 was the most impressive year: MGS 3 revived what was to me a tainted franchise, San Andreas gave us perhaps the most gigantic and sprawling (not to mention quite fascinating) video game world a console had ever seen, and the RPG genre had at least half a dozen enjoyable new entries, from Fable (which was overhyped but still turned out to be fun) to X-Men Legends (a good comic book game? Crazy!). Good year for Star Wars games too, Battlefront and KotOR 2 were both great (even if KotOR 2 desperately needed a few more months in the oven). And as far as shooters go, well, Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 pretty much speak for themselves.

Also, Acclaim shut down. Which was just good for the overall quality of games in general.

Not to sound stupid, but for me, years of video game releases kinda bleed together, especially as for the past half-decade or so, I would buy most stuff used months/years after it originally came out. Now that I've got an Xbox 360, I'm actually buying new games.

So anyway, as for my "not to sound stupid" comment, I think 2007 was a damn fine year for games. Orange Box (Portal), Halo 3 (like it or not), Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy, Rock Band, Assassin's Creed....others I'm probably forgetting.

Not saying this is TEH BEST YEAR EVAR!!!11!!1!!, but in order for me to think of a better one, I'd have to do some research, which I don't feel like doing right now.

Actually, 2007 is a pretty good choice, definitely better than '05 or '06 as far as I can recall. As for remembering, I only remember years after I had the Internet, because of reading reviews and whatnot. I couldn't tell you much about any of the years before 2001 or so (which means it's quite possible my favorite year was during the 16 or 32-bit era, and I just don't recall).

For myself, the year the snes came out. The games wowed me in ways that the 3d systems never could. I love the games we have now, and realize they are superior in many ways, but there is something about the way those games feel that I don't think I will ever experience again on any other system. I'm sure my age is a factor somewhere.

            2001 is a great choice, but I like 96' and 98' better.

            1996
            Duke Nukem 3D
            Resident Evil
            Super Mario RPG
            Quake
            Super Mario 64
            Diablo

            1998
            Starcraft (and its expansion)
            Pokemon Red/Blue
            Xenogears
            Metal Gear Solid
            Half Life
            Legend of Zelda: OoT

Also, go on wikipedia and type in "X in video gaming" where X is any year. You'll get a list of noteable releases.

Good point, I forgot to mention the Wiki thing. Also, I would agree about '98, great year. Wasn't that Resident Evil 2 as well?

Seraphim, I agree about the SNES, it's my favorite system, but for me the year it came out is meaningless, since I didn't actually get one until '94. I'm typically at least a couple years late getting into a generation. The only time I wasn't was when I bought a GBA at launch, which proved to be a bad idea.

As for the Dreamcast, you know, there's this hardcore fanbase for the machine, but I never really understood it. What games were there on the system that made it deserving of such acclaim? I'm not asking in a facetious way, I'm genuinely curious. Didn't own one myself, nor did I play it too often (had a friend who owned one, but the only multiplayer games I recall playing were Soul Caliber, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and Power Stone).

                Sonic Adventure
                Sonic Adventure 2
Grandia 2 (PS2 version was crap)
                Skies of Arcadia
                Virtual On Oratorio Tangram
                Seaman
                Shenmue
                Marvel vs. Capcom
                Marvel vs. Capcom 2
                Soul Calibur
Resident Evil 2 (with exclusive bonus content never seen outside the DC release)
Resident Evil 3 (with exclusive bonus content never seen outside the DC release)
                Resident Evil Code Veronica
                Phantasy Star Online
                Jet Grind Radio
                Samba De Amigo
                ... I could keep going, but I won't.

VMUs that let you take portions of your game with you away from home, the first real online console, first analog buttons on a console controller (L and R triggers), best arcade stick ever, everything about the system and the way it did things was new and completely unique.

It's also hilariously easy to pirate Dreamcast games.

For the same reasons Sampson listed.

Oh, what were the added features exclusive to the Dreamcast versions of RE 2 and 3?

movie viewers, model viewers, and TONS of new costumes in 3. it's not a whole lot of stuff, but they arent in any other versions of the games, so the DC versions are a bit superior in that aspect, along with being able to look down at your controller at any time and see your health and remaining ammo.

Actually, just looked it up on Wiki, those features are not exclusive to the Dreamcast versions. Aside from viewing health in the VMU, of course. That at least was exclusive.

As for the list, of the games I've played on it, not bad. Compared to other systems last gen it isn't overly great, but considering how little time the console had (and how much early lineups often suck), it was a promising start. I can see why people wanted it to go on.

1998 was a great year. Besides everything else, Square was actually taking chances. Brave Fencer Musashi, Einhander, Xenogears...
