    The Ultimatum Game

AHHHHH. Hey, look who's come crawling back! Hope all is well over here.

I'm doing a research project for one of my classes, and need to hand out an assload of these surveys. The survey is actually pretty interesting, but I need as much data as I can possibly get.

If you'd be so kind, could you take 5 minutes of your time, copy and paste the survey into a message, and PM (or email) me with your results? Please?

    PLEASE?

    Thanks.

There's two copies of the survey, which I've named "pink" and "green". The first 3 questions are the same in each, but the last four questions slightly differ, so if you wanna catch em all you gotta do both (but you're totally welcome to fill out just one. Or none, if you're gonna be like that).

Please don't chat with each other about the survey until you've filled it out, for academic integrity reasons or something. On Sunday, after my paper is due, I'll post the results, and if anyone's remotely interested, describe what the whole thing's about.

    Here's the games:
(If you decide to fill out both, you don't have to answer the first 3 questions on both of them, because they're exactly the same.)

You and one other person are playing a game. Consider the following situations.

    Situation 1:
I have laid $100 on the table in front of you and another person. YOU must decide how to split up this money between the two of you. If the other player accepts your offer of how to split up the money, you each get to keep whatever portions you decided on. However, if the other person does NOT accept the offer you suggest, NEITHER of you get any of the money. Note that you will only be playing the game with this person once.

This game is called the ultimatum game.
Please take a moment to make sure you understand the game, and then answer the following:

    a) How much of the $100 do you offer the other player? $_________

    b) If, instead, the other person happened to be in charge of making you an offer, what’s the smallest offer you’d be willing to accept? $_________

    Situation 2:
This time I lay down $1,000 between you and another person (not the same person as before), and you play the ultimatum game. Again, you are in charge of splitting up the money between the two of you. Like Situation 1, if the other player accepts, you both keep your respective portions, but if the player rejects, the entire $1,000 goes back to me.

    a) How much of the $1,000 do you offer to give to the other player? $_________

    b) If, instead, the other person happened to be in charge of making you an offer, what’s the smallest offer you’d be willing to accept? $_________

    Situation 3:
In this situation, I lay down $10 between you and another player, and you play the ultimatum game.

    a) How much of the $10 do you offer to give to the other player? $_________

    b) If, instead, the other person happened to be in charge of making you an offer, what’s the smallest offer you’d be willing to accept? $_________

    Situation 4:
A coin is flipped, and you call it in the air. If you are correct, you will play the ultimatum game for $100. If you are incorrect, you will play for $10. Consider the following possibilities:

    a) You call heads, and are correct.
How much of the $100 do you offer the other player? $_________

    b) You call tails, and are incorrect.
How much of the $10 do you offer the other player? $_________

    Situation 5:
Almost 1000 sealed, indistinguishable envelopes are fanned out, each with a different amount of money inside between $10 and $1000. You pick one envelope. That envelope is opened, and you play the ultimatum game for the amount of money inside. Consider the following possibilities:

    a) You choose an envelope, and it contains $1000, the largest possible value.
How much of the $1000 do you offer the other player? $_________

    b) You choose an envelope, and it contains only $10, the smallest possible value.
How much of the $10 do you offer the other player? $_________

    Situation 6:
I ask you a series of extremely simple trivia questions, and for every question you get right, I place $10 onto the table. Your partner does not play. After you have finished answering the questions, you play the ultimatum game with the amount of money you’ve earned. Consider the following possibilities:

    a) You answer 10/10 simple questions correctly for a total of $100.
How much of the $100 do you offer the other player? $_________

    b) You answer only 1/10 simple questions correctly for a total of $10.
How much of the $10 do you offer the other player? $_________

    Situation 7:
I ask you a series of extremely difficult trivia questions, and for every question you get right, I place $100 onto the table. Your partner does not play. After you have finished answering the questions, you play the ultimatum game with the amount of money you’ve earned. Consider the following possibilities:

    a) You answer 10/10 difficult questions correctly for a total of $1000.
How much of the $1000 do you offer the other player? $_________

    b) You answer only 1/10 difficult questions correctly for a total of $100.
How much of the $100 do you offer the other player? $_________

Edit: Please don't scroll down from here unless you've already filled out a survey, or don't intend to do so. Some people have posted their answers and strategies in this topic, and I don't want bunk, swayed results. Thanks.

    Re: The Ultimatum Game

That seems pretty interesting, indeed. I could maybe fill those out for you tomorrow, but I don't have time tonight. When is the latest you can take them from us?

Also, would you like me to show this to some other communities that might fill it out? If so, is there an email address I can tell them to send their completed surveys to?

That would be GREAT. You can send any of the entries to czechsmex31@hotmail.com. That goes for anyone else, too.

The paper is due on Saturday at 11:59pm, but I'd like to have all my data in by the end of the day Thursday, early Friday at the very latest.

Filled it out. Anyone who knows a damn thing about sociology, anthropology, or economics understands what this is. Knowing a little game theory can also help too.

I don't think the results on the offers will deviate too much, to say the least.

                      Situation 3:
In this situation, I lay down $10 between you and another player, and you play the ultimatum game.

                      a) How much of the $10 do you offer to give to the other player? $5

                      b) If, instead, the other person happened to be in charge of making you an offer, what’s the smallest offer you’d be willing to accept? $1

                      Situation 4:
A coin is flipped, and your partner calls it in the air. If he/she is correct, you will play the ultimatum game for $100. If he/she is incorrect, you will play for $10. Consider the following possibilities:

                      a) The other player calls heads, and is correct.
How much of the $100 do you offer the other player? $50

                      b) The other player calls tails, and is incorrect.
How much of the $10 do you offer the other player? $5

                      Situation 5:
Almost 1000 sealed, indistinguishable envelopes are fanned out, each with a different amount of money inside between $10 and $1000. Your partner picks one envelope. That envelope is opened, and you play the ultimatum game for the amount of money inside. Consider the following possibilities:

                      a) The other player chooses an envelope, and it contains $1000, the largest possible value.
How much of the $1000 do you offer the other player? $500

                      b) The other player chooses an envelope, and it contains only $10, the smallest possible value.
How much of the $10 do you offer the other player? $5

                      Situation 6:
I ask the other player a series of extremely simple trivia questions, and for every question he/she gets right, I place $10 onto the table. You do not play. After your partner has finished answering the questions, you play the ultimatum game with the amount of money your partner has earned. Consider the following possibilities:

                      a) The other player answers 10/10 simple questions correctly for a total of $100.
How much of the $100 do you offer the other player? $80

                      b) The other player answers only 1/10 simple questions correctly for a total of $10.
How much of the $10 do you offer the other player? $5

                      Situation 7:
I ask the other player a series of extremely difficult trivia questions, and for every question he/she gets right, I place $100 onto the table. You do not play. After your partner has finished answering the questions, you play the ultimatum game with the amount of money you’ve earned. Consider the following possibilities:

                      a) Your partner answers 10/10 difficult questions correctly for a total of $1000.
How much of the $1000 do you offer the other player? $1000

                      b) Your partner answers only 1/10 difficult questions correctly for a total of $100.
How much of the $100 do you offer the other player? $50

                          Nice work, Sherman.

I didn't join in for personal reasons, including my not being in the demographic, so to speak.

Ha. Indeed it seems my prediction was correct. Interesting read, Czechs.
