    Weird new law is passed

It's amazing what you can get passed in this country as long as you say "it's to protect the children" on it.

    http://www.news.com/8301-13578_3-9829759-38.html

This law that was overwhelmingly passed (voted against by Ron Paul and few others) requires those who offer wi-fi to report any child porn on their wires, including drawings, sculptures, or cartoons. So I'm guessing 90% of hentai and Michaelangelo's David can get you a fine or jail time now?

So does this only apply to public Wi-Fi connections or the internet as a whole?

Like does it mean if I just happen to look up hentai(for which I have really no interest in BTW) I could be fined if the ISP is required to report it?

Looks like ISP's are going to be working overtime now

Yea I'm also wondering if this is for the internet as a whole or just Wi-Fi. Because how are you supposed to track this on the internet with all the traffic going on?

            Guys, I don't think this about your ISP. I think this is about open Wi-Fi connections like McDonald's, Starbucks, etc;

It also sweeps in social-networking sites, domain name registrars, Internet service providers, and e-mail service providers such as Hotmail and Gmail,
This is the quote that my question came from, I thought it was Wi-Fi only also but this quote says otherwise unless Im misunderstanding it

The way it was worded in the article seems to make application of the law very loose. They could get people for this that are innocent just because they twist things around.

Yeah I mean if I look up...lets say...Goku or something in a search engine and it pops up with a few pics of hentai I could be in trouble for just wanting a clean picture of Goku

Yea that too. Also if say, you send a picture of your child to a relative over the internet, there will definetly be people who abuse this law and call your picture child pornography. Then you end up going to court over something as simple as a family photo. This law could definetly be abused and impede on innocent peoples rights and I think Ron Paul saw that. Too bad hardly anyone else did.

Yeah I see a lot of crowded jails and lawyer commercials being made specifically for this law

Re: Weird new law is passed

im having mixed feelings about this. in one regard id like a lot of the illegal crap to stop, the exploitation of children ect. on the other hand i feel its yet again an invasion of privacy due to how this is worded.

according to my take on this it looks like my own personal wireless laptop would be considered a wi-fi band, even though its inside my home it still provides a wi-fi band for myself. my email account would also be considered which i feel is a direct violation of my rights. email is an electronic form of letter and i dont like people reading my personal mail just the same as i wouldnt want someone listening to my phone calls.

i wonder if this law will make it possible to blackout sites like china does. that is all we need to take the route of china and blackout sites that the government thinks we shouldnt see - after all alot of the nasty stuff out there is hosted off us soil and in countries that have garbage laws.

It's a popular misconception that electronic forms of communication fall under the same laws as letters and mail. Phone calls, mail, and e-communication all fall under differing levels of legal scrutiny. If you don't own the medium of communication, you should not expect any sort of protection.

Most companies will conform to any government's request for information for fear of losing the ability to operate their business in that market. I think it was (edit: It's Yahoo actually) that turned over user-records to China so they could silence media outlets that weren't conforming to government standards and that led to the arrest of several dissidents.

Hasn't anyone here heard about the domestic security bill, or the patriot act? You don't HAVE privacy anymore...the nation's security can't afford it.

Your right, just one more thing we can thank the bush administration for doing. I wonder if the next government will reverse all those changes?
