do you ever do research for your rpg maker game?

i often find myself looking up idea more then i do actually making a game.

how many of you take the time to go out and research an idea before making a game on it? this means making sure you have historic facts, or accurate base information, perhaps even just to ensure proper illusions to an idea and so on.

what was it you looked up if you answered yes to this pole?

Yeah, I've done some research prior to making my game(s).

I looked up some folklore and historical facts about China.
I also researched different Martial Arts styles that exist.

I looked up a lot of stuff for my Item Creation system, such as names and descriptions of Minerals and Herbs. A lot of the time it was hard to know where to start, but usually a couple related-to links on Wikipedia did the trick. I also made some of them up, to add a little bit of a "another world" feel to my game.

I don't think I've looked up anything pertaining to any mythos or any other story-related stuff yet. That could change, I guess.

I cetainly haven't spent as much time looking stuff up (3-5 hours total) as creating stuff (~60 hours total) or dreaming stuff up (altogether too many hours!!), but it has been a significant and memorable part of the creation process.

I've thought about looking up what the normal layout of a castle is.

Does playing Castlevania and looking and the enemies and such count?

I often look up different mythologies, and names. I love Norse and Celtic names.

Basically names. I take a lot of god names and meanings and change them around. Like one site I found said Hike is the god of magic. I changed it to Hikera. Story wise I've been looking for some cool quotes to go off. I also like to forshadow so I look for other meanings to things. Thats about it though.

                I ususally do.

I did research on pirates and different legends based on objects for Cursed Desires.

And I did research on legends, and found a short story about a village of no graves. Which I used in Whispers in the Woods.

If you want it to be worth anything you need to research it. Research is an important part of writing a story.

nice to see alot of replies. research is important when creating game, or writing, or even story creation in general. i am surprised to see so many taking the time to learn more while making a game.

@dusk: not really, i was looking mostly for the information portion of research. i guess in a way playing a castlevania game is research if your using it as an idea for castle creation.

Re: do you ever do research for your rpg maker game?

I brushed up on some Bible reading when I was thinking of doing a game about the Virgin Mary. Other than that all my games haven't really had a connection with anything else so there was nothing to research.

Most of my games that deal with some sort of mythology or anything, I usually take info from my mind that I already knew on the topic.

I did one time find out that there is a canceled PS3 game that has the same name as my game.

Some of you took a look at my preview thread for my RM3 game. For those of you who didn't it takes place on a sort of alternate earth. I am a huge history buff and love to include my own twists on historical events in my stories.
