Okay, so I'm confused.(Now with bubbles!)

Maybe I'm dwelling on this, but if an artist creates brushes for photoshop, places it up on a site as an free download and then leaves a description with the following message:
This was done with Adobe Photoshop CS, so I hope the brushes work for earlier versions. =X

Click here to download the brushes (.abr file): [link]

    (
People liked my underwater scenes, and some even wanted some bubble brushes, so, here they are! It practically explains it all up there. I made 4 different types of bubbles (fine, small, medium, and large/big). A nice technique is to start with the fine bubbles and work your way up to the big bubbles. Don't use too many of the big bubbles, unless you have a huge working space. Change the colours of the bubbles depending on what colour your ocean background is.

This is how you install the brushes on your Photoshop:
First, download the brush file (.abr). Once you download it to your computer, open Photoshop. Now, click your paint brush, and follow this image to click Load Brushes [link] . Then find your .abr file and select it. Now your brush set should be at the bottom of your paint brush list.

To create your own brush, draw your brush(es) all in one colour, preferably black (on a new layer) (remember, you can also do transparency and fading and stuff). Next, highlight one of your brush images which you've drawn, then click Edit > Define Brush Preset. Name it, then hit OK. Your new brush should now appear at the end of your brush list!

I drew these bubbles with size 3 brush on sharp [link] , then used the soft brush with it still sharpened. Don't use these brushes with the sharpened option on or they will look horrible. :P And don't forget to hit that transparency button to try shade in the highlight white or use the gradient tool to make the shades different! Give it a try and tell me what you think.

.... OH, and if you are going to use the brushes, I would ask if you'd give credit somewhere that you got the brushes from me.
Would you not think that if you note the individual artist BEFORE you use them for a non-profit image, that they wouldn't have a problem? Also, why would they tell you how to use it if they don't want you to use it? Apparently this is not the case, I found a few images in the comments where people have used the brushes, and not been fussed at, but I asked before I even THOUGHT about using them and was turned down...? This just makes no sense to me? Am I right to question the artist about it, considering my usage will have no profit in it?

(I know this may be nitpicking, but I just want to make sure I'm not misunderstanding something here.)

Under creative commons, isn't it only illegal if there's some profit from it?

That's what I was thinking, but I am one to respect an artist's wishes when it comes to their creations, but I just don't get the mixed signals. You tell people "Sure! Use it, just give me credit for it!" and then when you are asked, you say "No, but good luck!"

      I don't get it.

Edit - and reviewing some laws, there are very few instances where that is true, with the illegality of it. It's still illegal if you get money or not, it's just rare that you get sued when no money is involved.

that is his stated permission so whatever he said to you is weird and deserves to be pushed. perhaps he understood you wrong?

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

That's the problem, Valk, I have too high of morals to do so, because I wouldn't want someone to do the same. It just bugs me, it's not like she isn't going to get exposure or that I'll claim they were my brushes. -.- I just don't get it.

            Edit - My original request
            Libra-In-Red said the following:

Hello, I'm Libra, and I found your awesome bubbles brush set here on DA, and I was wondering if I would be able to use them in my comic, [link] as a reoccuring graphic. I really dig how well you did these, and wish I could replicate the talent. If you allow me to use them, I would give full credit for their use and supply links to your DA page.

            Thank you very much,
            Libra in Red
            Their response-
Sorry, but I don't want my art being used in such a way. Thank you for asking though, and good luck!

            My pushing-
Thank you for the good luck, but I am a bit confused, were the brushes you made just for people to practice using in images, or were they made for wide use. I just want to make sure I wasn't confused by the description in the deviation: [link]

I'm not trying to be rude or argumentative, I just want to make sure I was not misunderstanding the terms of use of the brushes themselves, or if my request was misunderstood. As I said, it's mostly out of curiosity, and I will respect your desire not to use them.

The permission thing is if you are to use them in say, a Brush pack, or somthing. The actual files, not the piece of art itself.

See, now, this WAS a brush pack, made available through download. Other artists used them without asking permission and weren't fussed at by the artist, so I don't think that's the issue. I was only wanting to use the brush pack supplied...so I'm not sure if I follow what you are saying. I still feel the artist is contradicting herself.

The simple solution would be to just not use those brushes.

Yes, i know that, and prolly won't end up using them, but it's just annoying, when they are the best thing I've found for the images I need them for. I just can't STAND a hypocritical artist.

Just don't even let it bother you. You were being nice, the other person was just weird.

I'm sure the brushes would help, but you don't really NEED them.

But out of curiosity, are there any samples of how the brushes look when used?

I think next time I'll just use then show them later. -.0 I just don't understand some of these artists.

Trace them (roughly, so they're not identical), and make your own bushes.

making brushes in PS is easy anyhow, you can just make bubbles yourself and screw the middle man/woman/bot. As for the credits thing, the way i see it, if you dont have it on a pay site and make the files downloadable for anyone then its freeware HOLLA STRAIGHT UP!

I may attempt to replicate them through reference, but I don't dig tracing. I know that brushes are easy to create, it's just the drawing of the bubbles I am no good at. I have found a few free bubble brushes that I can manipulate to do the job, but I haven't figured out how to make them look believable in a comic setting. -.- Time will tell.
