I have no idea who he is, and if he's any good, and don't care enough to click the link, but I saw something about this on the TV while I was riding the bus last night. The only thing I know is that he's a defensive player, and that he lived near Miami.

IRC with his quick and witty zingers.
I think Smurtle's point (and correct me if I'm wrong) is to emphasize the fact that there are people (and dogs) being shot and killed every day, but because this guy plays football, it's big news. The tragic loss of life in every other case doesn't really matter, because they don't play football for a national audience every week.
But I could be way off base with this.

Well, it seemed as if everyone was missing the point, so I thought I'd spell it out.
Also, I'm wondering what was said before the edit.

Sean Taylor was a face that a lot of us knew, though. And a personality, a person, that some of us knew. Not just a number or another news story. It hits harder because it feels like it can happen to you.
I was deeply saddened when I found out about this; he was a great player and I hear he was working hard to change his life around to be a good role model for his children. It's tragic to lose a kid this young, and I don't care if it was his past haunting him or just some random anomaly, it's just as sad to have such a pointless loss of life.
Rest in Peace
