    Kooky Names

You ever had problems pronouncing peoples names? Or worse yet, other people pronouncing your name?

As an example, I'll present my last name, Dugas. Most people pronounce it Doo-GAS or Duh-Gus. But my last name is French, so....

    *** SPOILERS ***
It's Doo-Gah. THe S is silent. I think I'm either going to change my last name to something English or change my first name to Juste (the French version of my name, pronounced JOOST) and maybe even learn French and move to the French-speaking part of Canada.
    *** END SPOILERS ***

Any other weird names out there?

We had a motivational speeker come to our school the other day. Her name was Gaye. Like Gay, but she was really cool.

        St.Omer (Saint O-mare). It's Patwa (French-Caribbean).
There is also a city in France I believe with the same name, and a famous golf course.

Its rediculous the names parents are giving kids....is it suppose to make the parents look cool to other parents? Theyre torturing their kids for the rest of their life by doing that...

If the average kids start getting these types of names, it will become the norm. Just think, someday the nursing homes will be full of Britney's & Ambers* and names like Ethel and Doris will eventually become things of the past. Time change.

Hey now, Amber's are pretty cool. But I do agree, the **** with the unusual names is getting annoying. I can understand if you have a different culture, but when you are an American..I dunno, it's just irritating that I only have one kid in my room with a normal name for a little girl. -.-

Some americans do have normal names, but are spelled so far off from the way its suppose to be it just looks like a pile of letters grouped together.

                    Example

Natascha... Krystael(Ive known one of each unfortunately)

Chalsye (Chelsie) and Alijah (Elijah)... Lyiah. And Destinie (Which in fact is a little white girl from a semi-ghetto portion of town. >_<) I think the parents need to stop smoking whatever the heck they are smoking before they name their children.

                        Re: Kooky Names

i think a unique first name is way better than shoving another John Smith out there. a name's purpose is to be an identifier, something you distinguish the person by. i'm not as hot on the alternate spellings of the same-sounding name (kinda defeats half the purpose... you call their name in a crowded room and you still get 10 responses), but it's still better than having a Mike #3 in a group.

my last name is Van Zandt, which makes it easy to identify telemarketers as soon as they try to ask for it.

usually they try and make the "d" a full extra syllable, when it's basically silent, or they try and make the "Van" be a "Von".

The most common male first name in North America is Daniel, and most common last name is Anderson. At least they were a few years ago.

I don't know. The last name would be the same I guess, but I don't know about the first.
