    Installing a secondary OS

I have Windows Vista, and Ive partitioned off 15 Gigs worth of space for Windows 98, which I need for my Visual Basic program, now the question is, how do I install 98 on G: Drive?

I cant find any tutorials on how to do it, I know its possible I just cant find out how

i accidentally did this when my windows copy screwed up and it wouldnt allow me to fully remove the old windows i had. asked me which os i wanted at start up. why dont you try popping it in and click install?

im not sure it will even let you install an old version of a os when you have a more up to date version already.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

Umm I would be careful as Vista changed the bootload that normally ships with Windows, so it will be tricky getting both to boot up. However if you are installing it on a different physical hard disc, then there should be no problems as you can use your BIOS to change which one boots up (some even have a key you can press during POST to choose your boot device). However I would NOT just install 98 as you may not be able to access Vista again without using the repair feature of Vista, which may get tricky.

Thats what I thought, thats why I figured Id install it on another drive, thing is, its partitioned from the main drive, so I dont even know if thatll work.

So how do you get to the MS-Dos mode in Vista? Its not in the shut down menu and theres not an option for it at startup:/

I dont want to take a risk in losing everything so thats why Im asking.

              Re: Installing a secondary OS

              I can't use that

Host operating system: Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, Windows Server 2003 Standard x64 Edition, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
Leave it to Microsoft to offer this thing to every OS except the ones their computers ship with(Vista Home Basic)

                Re: Installing a secondary OS

You can still install the old OS on top off the new one, but it's a hell of a lot more work. Basically when you install the old copy of Windows its going to override the boot sector. The Vista information will still be there as they work in entirely different methods.

I did this with Windows XP, but I'm going to guess it'll work with 98 because I just had to use the command prompt and issue a few commands. These links should provide some insight to this process. Basically you'll create a new bootmgr so that Vista will load up. Windows 98 will become, earlier windows version or something similar. If it isn't on the record afterwards, you'll have to edit the Vista boot record to include it (which you might want something like EasyBCD considering the boot editor is not exactly user friendly).

These links should be the process to use after you've installed Windows '98. Another warning though, I did this with XP. Not 100% sure if it's the same for '98.

                  Re: Installing a secondary OS

I figured itd be simple to just install another OS on another drive and just select which one to boot at startup, but I guess it has to be more complicated then that

                    Re: Installing a secondary OS

If it helps, that is the end result here. You should install it to another disk, but your boot record is still going to get this lovely treatment.

                        Re: Installing a secondary OS

Well like I said if you install to a different physical disc it should be fine (not a partition). Though with windows I would unhook the other disk before installing, since I'm not sure how nice Windows is about its install (Linux prompts you about where you want to put the MBR which can be at the beginning of it's partition, the main disk, or the disk you install to).

Yeah but Id have to switch HD's everytime I want to run a different OS right?

No, just for the install (to make sure that 98 doesn't overwrite the boot sector on your other disk). After that you just switch the boot order in the BIOS. A little more work than doing it the bootloader way in the long run, but certainly a lot easier upfront.

Hey, thats just crazy enough to work

Its a little work, but completely worth it, especially if I can get VB working again
