    Unique upon release, commonplace now

What I mean by this is, take a game like Shadowman, for example. There might have been more, but this is the first game I ever played with a main character who was black, and I found that to be pretty unique (I'm not counting fighting games, etc, because those type of games don't really have "main characters").

I'm also thinking of games like the original Prince of Persia (circa late-80s), where all of his movements were so fluid. I had never seen anything like that before. There was a game my cousins had for the Sega Master system with Mickey Mouse, and when you let him sit in one place without doing anything for a while, he'll begin to start swaying back and forth and whistling. I had never seen anything like this before either (although, years later, I read about a game from years before where the main character pulls out a yoyo if you let him sit for too long).

So do you have any games worth mentioning that relate to this idea at all? And the first person that mentions Grand Theft Auto III gets negative rep.

mario party. pretty much gave birth to the minigame collection genre, which is easily one of the worst game genres there is.

Though I suppose you didn't have to play as him for the most part.

Well, I guess what I meant was, yeah, Barrett or whatever that guy's name is, IS black, sure, but he's a supporting character, and he's surrounded by "white" main characters. In Shadowman, he pretty much is the only character you control for the entire game, and one of the other main ancillary characters, this voodoo priestess is also a personage of the dark-skinned variety.

Bioshock. Not now, but soon we will see developers release games similar to BioShock.

Dragonstomper for NES because it was the first CRPG spawning game franchises like Dragon Quest which in turn spawned game franchises like final fantasy which in turn spawned countless other games and/or game franchises.

Double Dragon for NES... How many super hero games copied this set up huh?

River City Ransom for NES... The original GTA.

Leisure Suit Larry... Adult computer entertainment games and their humble beginnings.

I dunno, I'd give that honor to Track and Field.

I'd definitely say River City Ransom for adding RPG elements (free roaming, leveling up your character) to the co-op beat 'em up...sooooo ahead of its time.

First, Dragonstomper was for the 2600. Second, the direct attributed influence on Dragon Quest was Wizardry, which came out a year before.

I thought wizardry was more along the lines of might and magic. What influences are there in the DQ games?
