    256 Bit Consoles???

Mikochan came up with a good point, and I have also been wondering. Since this generation of consoles is 128 bit what will the next consoles be? I haven't heard one thing concerning bits and that’s all they used to say back in the day. Will it double its bit value like it has been doing which would be 256 bits? And what the hell is a bit anyway?

I think we wound up skipping a generation...
    NES/Master System (8-bit)
    SNES/Genesis (16-bit)
    N64/PlayStation (32- or 64-bit?)
    GameCube/PS2 (128-bit)

      N64 is 64 bit.(that's what the 64 stands for).
Bits are amouts of memory. The more bits something has,the faster the memory pops up.Therefore allowing a detailed image to load fast as compared to old machines that can only quikly load lower bit images.

As I understand it though, PS1 was 32-bit.

Bits are no longer a reliable way to determine graphics power.

            So there ya go.

The only real 128 bit console is the PS2. It has a 128 bit processor. The GC has a 64 bit processor and the Xbox has a 32 bit processor. Bit numbers don't matter anymore as you can see. The Xbox has the smallest number and still has the best graphics.

Ah well, we can still call the next generation the 256-bit generation, like we call this one the 128-bit generation. Makes it easier that way. I mean, what else would we call it?

The Genesis did 24 bits shortly after, did it not? And the 32X was, well, 32-bit, right?

                      Am I just stupid?

And I never regarded this generation of consoles as 128-bit generation. It was the NextGen Generation to me, because it was the first time I heard things referred to as Next Generation consoles.

Nintendo's 32-bit system was the Virtual Boy
Not that that's something to be proud of...

Okay, stupid question, if you call this generation the NextGen Generation, what do you call the generation with PS3, Xbox Next, and Revolution?
