Based on what's in the article, it sounds like pure and simple *phishing* to me. Which is illegal.
Now, whether that should result in actual legal consequences, or just a ban, should be based on whether the stuff he stole actually had value (manipulating "game data" is more of a disturbance than a felony)... and based on the article, he did steal about $5800 worth of stuff people would pay for.
Cyber crime is still crime, and personally, I'm overjoyed to see a case in which the police cracked down on it. If this becomes a trend, I think the net will be a much more enjoyable place for most of us.

Well, if you steal items in a game where the fake currency translates into real currency, aren't you essentially stealing real money? That's a crime if I've ever heard it. Just because you're on the internets doesn't mean you are lawless.

I feel the crime deserves punishment. But, what the hell is wrong with people. Paying actual money for fake furniture? Seriously. What's wrong with people?

People who spend their money on fake furniture do not have to worry...
