    Timer for December
Software giant announces that new console feature that lets parents ration game time will arrive next month; touts alliance with PTA.

Currently, all three current-generation consoles have parental controls. Like similar features on televisions and DVD players, the tools for the Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 let parents lock out games of a certain rating. Thus, a 35-year-old man could own Gears of War without worrying about his 5-year-old son accidentally playing it.

This morning, Microsoft upped the parental-control ante by officially announcing the long-rumored Family Timer feature for its Xbox 360 console. Based on a similar feature in the Windows Vista operating system, the feature lets parents limit the amount of time a child plays on a daily or weekly basis. Once a child nears the maximum playtime, a reminder will appear on the console to warn the player to save the game soon.

The Family Timer option will be a download from Xbox Live and will be available in December. Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division, unveiled it at a Washington, DC event this morning. The event was to promote PACT, "a family contract" being promoted by the Parent Teacher Association as a way "to foster family discussion about screen-ime guidelines." The PACT contract is available for download on the newly revamped family games section of Xbox.com.
I'm not interested in the fact that this is meant to prevent kids from constantly playing games, I'm just hoping this means hearing a lot less annoying kids while online since some will likely use up their time quickly.

I'd set the timer for three minutes, just to watch the reactions.

Well, when the fat-cat politicians want to impose regulation on gaming, we all say that parents should be responsible for what their kids see and do regarding videogames. So, MS is giving parents a way to do that more efficiently.

I wouldn't want these limits imposed on me, but it's better to have it imposed by parents than the government, and if the parents want to impose it, the kid shouldn't be able to get around it. So I actually give props to MS for this one. Hopefully they'll make the system a bit more robust.

EDIT: In light of some of the subsequent conversation, I wanted to clarify what I meant. I personally, as a parent, would not use this unless I felt my child's gaming was severely detracting from her academic or social life. I feel that gaming is generally a great hobby--it has its time and place, and shouldn't replace good parenting or friends--but it can also give you things that neither parents nor friends can. Gaming (usually) isn't the problem that needs to be addressed--overzealous public policy is the problem that needs to be addressed, and self-regulation is one way to stave it off. And to a lesser extent, of course, this is good because a kid shouldn't be able to weasel her way around her parent's wishes.

My parents limited my play time by just telling me to get off. Is it that hard nowadays? Of course if I was a smartass and told them no, Id get spanked though.

Jesus, I'm still trying to lose some weight I gained from being a lazy ass gamer as a kid.

They should also let parents have the option of taking away their kid's gamerscore.

He said spanked! Red flag! Alert the authorities. What a terrible parent!

What a bunch of jokers. Let the kids play the damn games. This isn't a good idea if you ask me. Video games are a big deal to some people. I see this as just an easy way for depressed parents to make their kids the football stars they never were.

Ummm, this isn't only a good idea, it's a GREAT idea. I know growing up, my parents would kick me off the computer or the PlayStation, and as soon as they forgot, I'd be right back on. It's about time a game company took the initiative to help parents monitor their kid's gaming. Of course, it takes the parent actually caring enough to set the timer to make it work, as opposed to the whole, "whatever" mentality parents seem to be sporting nowadays.

My parents wouldn't even be able to figure it out. They can't even turn the damn thing on let a lone download it. Not that it matters I did buy the system myself. Plus my parents are cool and don't care if I play video games.

Not to say I don't think it's a good idea. Now when people complain about kids playing too much we can blame someone esle.

Its called moderating an addictive habit.

I couldn't even imagine being seven or eight and playing games these days. I'd be hella addicted, more than Sonic the Hedgehog thats for damn sure.

Not sure I'd be punching my parents though.

Anyways maybe your parents couldn't figure it out, but many poeple here are parents, and I'll be damned if anyone here couldn't figure a consoles parental controls out.

Yeah, I think its a good idea. I practically began my life at 16 (hey, at least I'm doing things now. I'm and actor, a construction worker, and--starting in a month from now--a model), but I can't help thinking how much further I could be if my parents had limited the game time and made me go out and do things. Eventually I just got fed up with being a loser. :P
