I don't know who has gotten a chance to play this yet, but this game is a blast.
A lot of the events use the same motions, but compared to other track and field games (two buttons to alternate running, one to do whatever action the event uses) the fact that there is as much difference as there is in this game is a nice feature.
The total events are:
Track:
100m
400m
110m hurdle
400m hurdles
4x100m relay
Field:
Long Jump
Triple Jump
High Jump
Hammer Throw
Javelin Throw
Pole Vault
Aquatics:
100m swimming
4x100m swimming relay
Rowing
Shooting:
Skeet
Archery
Gymnastics:
Trampoline
Vault
Other:
Singles Table Tennis
Fencing
Dream Race
Dream Fencing
Dream Table Tennis
Dream Platform (10,000 meter dive)
I may have missed some, not sure. So far the hardest for me to understand has been the Vault, Javelin Throw, Table Tennis, and Triple Jump. I eventually got the Javelin down, and Table Tennis went from me losing 11-4 to winning 11-4 after I understood the timing. But I've only played Vault once, and I can't seem to figure out that damn Triple Jump.
Skeet is really fun, and I think Archery probably has the neatest controls, even if it is deliberately shaky to try to make it a little harder to aim. It's all of a lot of fun, especially with friends.
The "Dream" matches are variants of olympic games that have just been redone to be more video game like. Dream Race is a 4 lap race with items, Dream Fencing and Dream Table Tennis have special moves thrown in and slightly different point system, and Dream Platform has you positioning your fall and doing aerial tricks similar to Trampoline on the way down.
My only complaint is that you can't unlock new circuits unless you're playing one player, and it doesn't save any records on multiplayer either. (That's awesome that you broke the world record and threw the javelin 104m! What? You're doing two player? Oh, too bad. Nevermind.)
I bought it, and despite it being the same events over and over, I can't seem to stop playing it. Most websites only gave the game like a 6/10 review, but from what I've seen (a guy posted on GameFAQs linking about 14 reviews for other track and field games) none of the olympic games have ever gotten a very high score due to the repetition of it all.
At the very least, please rent it, even if you don't buy it. It might take a few tries to understand just how an event works, or figuring out how early/late to throw the Javelin, or how to do that DAMNED TRIPLE JUMP without screwing up, but it's a fun game. Easy to beat, but tons of those damned missions and medals and events and unlockables for EACH character.
100% will take a long, long time. Think Mario Power Tennis, and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour.
