New Game Info-A Ronin Story (RPGM3)

    A Ronin Story (RPGM3)

Since my work on this game is nearing completion, I figured I might as well post some information on it, maybe get some feedback. The game should be ready for release by early December.

    -Gameplay-

Random battles will be present within the game but will not play a huge role. They appear on over world maps but can usually be bypassed by following paths or avoiding specific kinds of terrain. They play a limited role in dungeons as well, usually only appearing on select floors and always on the lowest setting; they mainly exist as a source of quick cash since experience will only be gained through boss battles.

The game features element based combat. Almost every enemy will be weak to some kind of skill while others may be immune to skills in general or physical attacks. Boss battles are more complex, as bosses may shift their weaknesses during different phases of the battle and in some instances you will need to use the right defensive skill to protect yourself from their powerful attacks.

The dungeons will also feature a variety of puzzles, such as fighting the right enemy in order to proceed, activating switches in the correct order, navigating through mazes, and following a set path in order to avoid traps (kind of like the signpost maze in Zelda: Link’s Awakening).

The game will also feature a bounty hunting type of side quest, where NPCs will hire you to complete a certain objective and reward you upon it’s completion with either money, or a valuable item or piece of equipment. While some of these missions will involve tracking down a specific enemy and killing it, others will be more complex. Most of these will not be necessary to complete the main game, but will serve as a good source of money, offer valuable items and equipment, and may even unlock new areas.

    -Characters-

Akira: The main character of the game, he will also be the only permanent party member, since most other party members will join you for only a specific part of the game, and then leave. He was formerly a member of the warrior class of his homeland, Sekai. However, when Sekai was attacked by its western neighbor Gaia and the battle looked hopeless, he abandoned Sekai’s forces. During the ten years since the invasion, Akira has been living his life as a mercenary and has accumulated a large fortune. He is despised by many people from Sekai for his desertion but is well liked by the occupying forces from Gaia and has gained quite a reputation. Akira wields a katana and has good attack power. While he begins the game with no skills, he will acquire various elemental attacks after defeating bosses of the necessary element.

Ivan: A man from the northern country of Slobainia who was involved in a mad quest to summon the mighty demon Mephistopheles. He was betrayed by his partner Nikolay, who summoned the demon on his own after Ivan and his comrades retrieved the necessary equipment. Now Ivan wants to hire Akira to help him exact his revenge on Nikolay, by acquiring the remains of four powerful demons which he will use to bolster his own power. Ivan will be the first ally you acquire. He uses a broadsword and a shield in battle, and while his melee attack is not as strong as Akira’s, he does start off with some skills (when Akira does not have any skills), making him useful for the time that he stays with you.

Monica: A priestess and loyal servant of Gaia’s church. While she is a bit inexperienced, she is determined to uncover the source of the new wave of demons that has been plaguing the world. Since she’s a member of the church, she knows a good deal about demons and will be able to help Akira locate the four demons that Ivan has hired him to kill. Monica’s melee attack is not very formidable but she is well versed in healing skills, and later on gains some powerful offensive skills.

Pelagea: Ivan’s older sister and the favorite of their father. She has always been the more skilled fighter and has been named the heir to the family estate, Sofino. Even though Ivan was disowned by his father when he sided with Nikolay in an attempt to summon the demon Mephistopheles, Pelagea still cares about Ivan and wants to find him. Pelagea wields a Great Sword and has a strong melee attack. She also knows support skills which can help bolster her attack and defense.

Nikolay: The head of the Himalaiskoe estate in Slobainia. Nikolay provided Ivan with information on the Valdeos, a book which contains informations on summoning demons, and promised that once they had the book in their possession, they would summon Mephistopheles and share his power together. However, once Ivan retrieved the book, Nikolay double-crossed him and summoned Mephistopheles on his own. Now, with Mephistopheles’ power, he is beginning his attack on the rest of the world and hopes to bring the rest of Slobainia, and eventually, Gaia and Sekai under his control.

Sen: Another mercenary from Sekai whom Nikolay has hired to kill Ivan, and later Akira. She will attack several times throughout the course of the game, but will usually be more of a nuisance than a serious threat.

Mephistopheles: He is the powerful demon that Nikolay summoned and is the source of the increase in minor demons appearing throughout the world. He does not seem to have a strong hatred of humanity, the way most people would assume, but merely views their souls as a potential source of nourishment for himself and his underlings, which is why he is helping Nikolay conduct his war.

    -Areas-

The game features three overworld maps, each with their own distinct atmosphere and characteristics.

Sekai: This is where you begin the game. It is an island nation partially modeled after Japan, though this is limited since virtually all of the buildings have a medieval European design (at least it has cherry blossoms). About ten years before the start of the game, Sekai was conquered by its western neighbor Gaia, which instituted its government and religious beliefs over the small island nation. While the people of Sekai’s capital, Okiku, have generally accepted Gaia presence, there are still small pockets of resentment in smaller towns. Sekai is also home to two of the game’s dungeons.

Gaia: Being the largest nation in the game, this country is where you will spend most of your time. It is modeled after southern medieval and renaissance Europe. It contains the large castle Millus (the capital of Gaia), and two towns, one of which seems to have met with an unfortunate fate. It also contains three of the game’s dungeons.

Slobainia: The northern most land, it is modeled after Russia and other northern European nations. Due to its harsh, cold environment, random enemy encounters are almost nonexistent, limited only to the forested areas. It contains the two warring estates of Himalaiskoe and Sofino, as well as two of the game’s dungeons.

Sounds very interesting now that I read through it all. I'm interested in seeing how you put all of these thoughts together. I was wondering how far along are you in making it?

Why does everyone dislike battles so much? It's an rpg isn't it?

I like the treatment of battles you've worked out there. It's thought out well, and it will add to the enjoyment of the game I think. Puzzle dungeons are also great, as long as they're not too overly complex. I learned that lesson from my first game...one of those dungeons was WAY too seriously complex, even after I changed it in the final version. When you've got RE's in there, regardless of how low you have them set, it's something to keep in mind.

The side quests also sound cool. Will the main part of the game be open-ended a bit, also?

I look forward to hearing more.

Overall this sounds great, I'm looking forward to hearing about how it progresses!

Well thought-out backstory and characters. I like the title a lot, even if it's a slightly bizarre use of "ronin" (masterless samurai). Sekai and Gaia do sound like they'd be more fun to play through than Slobainia. It sounds like you've got some good ideas as far as gameplay/scenario features goes, so now it's just a matter of making them fun, interesting, and not too gimmicky. And I do think you're gonna pull it off.

Normally I'd be giving a lot of advice here, but you already seem to have a strong sense of direction in the way you want to design your game (and, to boot, it's a good direction), so just go for it!

grinding is acceptable in a professional game but for small time rpgs it just seams like a time waster. when each game is exactly the same for battles (variety wise) it becomes old fast. most players just wont sit through a long game so best to get it out short and sweet, with as little filler as possible. another big reason for the dislike is because so many people bomb when it comes to balance which has made more then a few games unplayable.

So... How many other people feel this way? I was planning on using random battles. Now, I'm not so sure.

Just do what I'm doing, don't make it so you have to level grind to progress. I'm balancing my game so you don't have to fight every single enemy you come across. That will make things easier, but If I do the elemental stuff right it shouldn't matter level so much, but stradegy.

Re: New Game Info-A Ronin Story (RPGM3)

                      Thanks for the comments everyone.

I was wondering how far along are you in making it?
The game is currently about 60-70% done. It should be ready by early December.

how long will your game be to play?
My estimate is that the main game will probably take about six to seven hours to complete, without doing any of the optional stuff (although it's hard to say since it's not finished yet). I usually try to avoid making games too long since I want people to actually finish them. However, the side quests should make the game quite a bit longer if one decides to undertake them all.

Will the main part of the game be open-ended a bit, also?
As of now, I'm not planning on having the main quest be open ended in any significant way.

Well, the game is finished and has been posted here, I'll get around to putting it on the Mag soon too. Overall, I'm happy with it. It's not as long as I thought it would be, but I always seem to over estimate the length of my games. If you have comments, feel free to leave them in this thread, or send me a PM.
