Celestia - AstroSynthesis Creations (warning - Image Heavy)

    I'm addicted to these programs:

    Celestia
That program is a lot like an observatory simulator like Stellarium, but unlike those not only can you zoom in, you can actually change your perspective. You can zoom into the moon, and then turn around and look at Earth. It's a 3D universe simulator that has all of the latest star and planet data built in. Not only that, but it moves in real time. You can speed time up and slow it down, to see things going really fast which is cool. It also comes with the ability to display night-time textures, so that the cities of Earth can be seen during the night phase.

The BEST thing about it for me though, is that you can make add-ons. That's where the next program comes in.

    AstroSynthesis
That one is basically a random universe creator. It's really cool, but just not as interactive or graphically badass. The cool thing about it though, is that it comes bundled with a program called Fractal World Explorer. That program randomly generates planet textures, and you can use those in Celestia, which is what I've done.

    Here are some I made:

That one is a phosphorescent moon that absorbs light from its sun (which shines in the ultraviolet range of the spectrum), and then glows during its dark phase. It was made using the alternate texture option in the program. Both textures are identical, but one is in daylight, and the other is in darkness. The object in the bottom left is the moon's planet.

The next one is another moon, but around a gas giant.

This last one is an almost cooled collapsed star. It spins really fast, and I actually had to slow time down to almost nothing to get a screenshot that wasn't blurred.

Oh, btw, Celestia is FREE. The trial version of AstroSynthesis is fully functional, you just can't save star/planet systems that you make. You CAN however use Fractal World Explorer, make a terrain, and then import it into another program to save it.

    That's actually really really awesome.

That is awesome. Maybe now I can finally create an image of the planet in the sci-fi story I plan to create. I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. I even thought about it this week.

Thats pretty cool, I see Apollonius takes 500 days for a full rotation, no wonder it glows, if a ultraviolet sun shone on me for 250 days Id probably glow too

Another cool thing about Celestia is that you can specify hotpoints on certain parts of a plant's terrain, and link that to a web page where you can put a JPG of the planet's terrain from the surface, or even an embedded flash video that shows your descent down to that spot. Whatever you can put on a web page, you can make as your link, including text about the planet or moon, etc.

And as for making random terrains to display on those pages, check this out:

          Terragen

When I got it, it was free. I didn't check the download page, though. Oh, and you can use that program to make the descent video I mentioned earlier, or another video where you fly through the valleys you just made.

Here's a landscape I made to go with a terrestrial planet:

Yeah, I haven't quite gotten the hang of the numbers involved, it's a lot of trial and error. So far I've just been focusing on getting the terrains, the distances, and the size proportions looking right.

Try this. That is the direct download for the trial version. Did you get Celestia? If you need any help working with those 2 (actually 3) programs, just let me know.

All right, I'm glad I downloaded the right thing.

You know, it disturbs me that I have 1,400 posts and I've almost got my third Gobli, and you have 800 posts and have your first Gold Gobli. But then again, you've made Shadow of the Tower's and I'm still making my first game.

I use terragen all the time, heres a few Ive made over the few years Ive had it.

I'll rep you if you post something great that you made in this post. As a matter of fact, I'll rep you for every good one. How's that for motivation? And by 'good' one, I mean every one that it's obvious that you worked hard on it. I know what a planet looks like with all default settings, so...not that. I'm just interested to see other people's planets that they made.

Those were amazing. All of them were, but my favorite one was the 4th one. How did you get plants in there? The version that I have doesn't have that option. Did you just turn the ground texture green? Maybe it's just the shade of green I used, but when I tried that it just looked like green rocks. Man, you're making me want to bust Terragen out again. It's been a long time since I used that.

                      Thanks for the compliments

I use the free version, cant exactly remember how I did it, I think I made the terrain completely green and had a snow terrain overlapping it, but I lowered fractal noise(or whatever its called) so its thinly scattered throughout the terrain. When I generated the terrain I turned bumbiness(or whatever it was) all the way up

If you want you can make a Terragen topic somewhere and Ill make a few tutorials and stuff to help you out, maybe itll encourage more people to get into it.
