    Prostitute Protest

    Not for the squeamish.

A PAZ (Reuters) - Prostitutes in the Bolivian city of El Alto sewed their lips together Wednesday as part of a hunger strike to demand that the mayor reopen brothels and bars ordered closed after violent protests by residents last week.

"We are fighting for the right to work and for our families' survival," Lily Cortez, leader of the El Alto Association of Nighttime Workers, told local television.

"Tomorrow we will bury ourselves alive if we are not immediately heard. The mayor will have his conscience to answer to if there are any grave consequences, such as the death of my comrades," she said, surrounded by about 10 prostitutes who had sewn their lips together with thread.

Some 30 other women were shown fasting inside a medical clinic nearby.

Mayor Fanor Nava told local radio he would not reopen the brothels and bars closed after city residents fed up with underage drinking and crime stormed the red-light district in El Alto, an impoverished city just north of La Paz.

Prostitution in Bolivia is legal but pimping is outlawed.

Student activists who want the bars and brothels permanently shut down were also on a hunger strike, along with the leaders of an association representing bars, restaurants and karaoke establishments.

"It's not only us owners and the sex workers who are affected, there are thousands of waiters, cooks, bartenders, taxi drivers and street vendors who will be without income," said Ramiro Orellana, spokesman for the business group.

El Alto is one of the largest urban areas in Bolivia, with nearly 1 million inhabitants, mostly Aymara and Quechua Indians.
    Ugg, this is bizarre.

There's no good pictures. That's pretty bold, I wonder if they'll bury themselves. That'd be bold as ****.

sounds like the problem is about to solve itself.

the problem is serous on both ends. these people want to have money to support their family but the mindset is totally wrong and driven by desperation. their government is taking a good stand against these clearly defunct establishments that even the citizens wanted closed.

their governments seamed to not have an alternative plan to get these brothel people working in different fields which lead to this protest. its easy to forget that no mater how horrid the situation, people are still working to survive and using the only means necessary. this is a job for them and a means of survival, even if its a much lower standard of living then our own western world.

though i dont like the idea of legal prostitution, i think this country should reopen the establishments but provide better law to ensure that they do not cross the line again in allowing underage children to drink there. when your a fairly poor country you really need to balance the needs of the people, the desires of the populace, and your ability a government (if you cant enforce it then the situation will just repeat).

            depressing indeed.

              "Pimping"?

Well, I'm generally not in favor of prostitution (though I don't see why it's outlawed), cause of the whole "degradation of women" thing, people do have to make livings.

I don't see how prostitution or stripping/etc is 'degrading' to women if it's a choice made by the woman.

Whether it's legal or not, prostitution is/hasalwaysbeen here. Do you not agree that if prostitution was legalized, i.e. sanctioned and moderated, there would be less crime, disease, and ugly hookers?

its a societal view more then anything, and in many circles its a morality issue. most often selling your body for sex is seen as desperation or as a last resort to survive or very negatively as in the form of sex slavery. the illegality of it in all (?) democratic countries may also be a contributor to that sentiment, as well as the religious views of at least the 3 largest world religions are against it.

where you can choose to enter that business then it seams to be "alright" but most cases their is not choice (sex slavery, "indentured slavery", desperation).

By "degrading" I mean "instructs males to think of them as inferior". Porn is a "choice" but that doesn't mean it doesn't have bad psychological effects. Oh, and "choice" is debatable, since (I think) a lot of prostitutes are poor and therefore do not have much of a choice.

actually that is untrue. male choice to watch woman strip is often characterized as moraly wrong and degrading. some worship the female form, some like to use it the same way they do porn - as a stimulant, enjoying what they cannot have. porn it used as a stimulant or even as a "guide" prior or during sexual play. the fact that alot of the patrons are pigs doesnt help its reputation, and religion is very strongly against this

the effects are unique to the person. porn is a tool, what each person does with it or views it is up to them. to say porn causes destruction of family would be the same argument jack tompson uses to say video games are bad.

Forced rape and sex slavery aren't prostitution. They're rape and slavery.

Desperation doesn't discredit that prostitution is a choice that they are making.
