    Dear Microsoft..

You know what? Vista sucks some major donkey body parts. How is it that you boast of greatness when you can't even run NW1 without a ****load of hassle? And the point of running 71 processes in the background? This is why you should always be standing over your mother's shoulder before she purchases her band new laptop...

    I hate you.

    I'm sticking with XP.

Have you upped the virtual memory paging file? Putting that at 4 gigs helps many of the vista gremlins, I've found. (I don't own it, but I offer that as advice to all vista users and many say it helps a lot.)

The problem with it is that it's my mother's computer and if I try and do any streamlining, she FREAKS. Yet she still *****es about it being so slow..>_<

I want to send Microsoft a e-mail telling them what fleshy part of my pasty posterior their Vista can sink it's broken teeth into.

I've owned vista since beta 2 and it's been nothing but wonderful for me. I'm almost entirely sure you're doing something wrong (wanting to play nwn is something wrong btw). I doubt you know what you're doing when you're "streamlining."

You shouldn't have 71 process open when it's idle, I have 55 open and that's with running aim, an email program, an mp3 player, and steam.

ive got around 70ish crap running while im on xp. some games/programs eat up all your memory which could be the source of the slow down. vista blows, i dont see any reason to get it.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

            Windows is for Internet ONLY.

All other functions of computers (art, games, programming, etc) happen in MAC or Linux.

To expect Windows to do anything well, except surf the web, is misplaced confidence.

That goes for ALL windows operating systems too!

            MOO!

Heh. I think alot of the problems is that I have a mother who has too much useless crap on there. With streamlining, it's bascially about shutting off certain Services that have no use to a middle-aged woman who just wants to use it for the internet. Like removing the print-spool because she has no printer, or the help because she doesn't use it. Stuff like that. then again, I am dating a techie, so I may be one of those weird people...

What part of the MAC makes games better? The little support?

Ask Nash, or somebody who plays games on their computer!

I don't play any online or computer games.

                  I just makes them.

But I know that the better overall graphics performance on a mac, or the better responsiveness of Linux, HAVE to be better than the Idiocy of Windows!

I'm prejudice, so I don't have to be able to back up my opinions with facts!

                  That's the Beauty of Prejudism.

if the mac is anything like the crap ive had to deal with for my crappod then they can get bent. their customer support is about as useful as a granade up my ass.

mac rhymes with crap which is precisely my thoughts on it.

                      Re: Dear Microsoft..

Rodak, you do realize pretty much all computer games are made for WINDOWS, right (the bigger ones anyway, smaller ones are typically multiplatform). Not saying it's necessarily better for them, but companies seem to think so (of course 80% or whatever marketshare is certainly a factor when they make their decision). So while Windows is not always the best performing, it can be with a little work, just like all the other OSes. I've never owned a Mac so I can't really comment on that, but for doing most things I've found Windows a lot less hassle than a couple of the Linux distros. And I can get it to work for me.

As for Vista, I say wait for SP1 to come out, and better driver support. Also trying to run Vista with an older computer is not wise, as it is pretty resource intensive.

As for processes, people put a lot of dumb things on their computer, and don't read through installation processes and look at checkboxes. So many things get installed when you don't pay attention to what you're agreeing to (not the way it should be, but it is). I have 44 processes running on my XP machine, with browser and outlook open, and the 4 or 5 tray processes I have for some of my hardware. Really the biggest bane to Windows is all the crap the manufacturers of computer put on there to begin with (though sadly a lot of users need it to protect the computer from them). Mine being built by me has none of that.

So with a little care windows isn't all that bad, and there are tons of articles out there to make it better. Same goes for Linux. Microsoft as a company is another story, but their products aren't that bad, and have actually improved quite a lot (the .NET platform is actually pretty awesome, still a little bloated). I'm still holding out on Vista, mainly because I'm a bit of minimalist so I don't need a whole lot of fancy graphics (though it does have a couple of nice new features like easily editable metadata for files and program previews in the task bar).

                        @TCC
Yeah, the 10+gigs of HD space Vista alone takes up isnt worth the prettiness it puts out, thats why I set it to classic windows

Honestly Id rather have 98SE, XP sucks and so does Vista

and so does mac and linux

Well customer support in general is usually not helpful, I don't think it's a Mac only problem.

                            forgot to add that...

all that online help and it doesnt do anything for me, out of all the problems Ive ever had with windows, not ONE time has help been able to help me

And everytime I tried to email anyone they never write back

why microsoft, why do you not care about your customers

There's not as many games for Mac because not as many people own macs. It's a market reason. Mac's handle graphics a hell of a lot better than windows; in pretty much every single way. Hell look how nice the first edition of OSX looked 1999. It's sharp, it's clean, it's user friendly, it doesn't get viruses. Yeah I may not have as many games, but I would rather have a better computer. Quality over quantity my friend.

On the customer support issue. I've never really needed customer support. Mac's are self explanatory unless you're retarded. I'll admit the old days of mac before osx weren't so pretty. But it's present day that matters. I know someone who has used customer support and they've solved every problem he's had running an entire school of em.
