A man picking up his son from school was taken into custody for questioning by police after he crashed his SUV into an athletic building injuring four students, including his son, officials said. The accident occurred around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at the South San High School boy's athletic field house located adjacent to the football field. The impact of the crash left a gaping hole through the brick wall of the junior varsity locker room, where at least two boys were trapped in the rubble.
San Antonio Police Sgt. Gabe Trevino, a spokesman for the department, said at the scene there were still many unanswered questions. Trevino said they were unsure what caused the man to hit the wall but said he did show possible signs of intoxication. He said the cause would be considered an accident until the driver could be tested and the scene investigated more thoroughly.
Police and school officials did not release names of the students injured or the name of the man who crashed the vehicle, but they believed the boy hit in the parking lot before the SUV crashed into the wall was the man's son. The boys injured were possibly 15 to 16 years old, officials said.
Ed Suarez, spokesman for the district, said two students "were injured seriously enough to be taken to University Hospital," but the conditions of those students were not released. Suarez also said one student was taken to a different nearby hospital, and the fourth student was treated at the scene.
Counselors from the school were at the scene ready to talk to students after the accident happened, Suarez said. He added they would be made available at the school as long as needed. As students gathered around the field house, the stories of who was involved circulated quickly. Three students who saw the injured boys confirmed that they are junior varsity football players who were in the locker room after practice.
The man's son also was said to be a junior varsity player.
Football player Eric Castillo, 17, saw the two boys who were crushed underneath the falling lockers. He was able to jump back and only suffered a minor bump on his forehead. Castillo tried to help one student who was not as lucky. The lockers just fell forward on us, he said.
A couple of players got trapped under the wall, he said. I saw this kid's ankle just hanging. His bone was sticking out. Everyone was screaming.
Castillo's friend, Blandon Ford, 16, was waiting for him outside when he heard a car honking and then saw the swerving SUV.
It was coming right towards me so I just ran, Blandon said.
Anthony Rodriguez, a 14-year-old freshman football player waited with his mother in the parking lot, hoping for some information. Anthony said he is a friend of the boy who was hit but did not see what happened. He just knew he had been quickly taken away in an ambulance.
