Old man wants to go to college.

Yeah, I'm late on the whole college thing. I should've prepared in high school, but I focused too much on just passing and coping with a whole bunch of crappy family situations in a row.

But now I wanna learn! I wanna get a STABLE job. And I want to live on my own. NO roommates, roommates suck ass, unless you're doing 'em or something.

The only place that may fit my needs(and actually be in the state of MI), is Michigan State University.

I don't know what I wanna do, all I know is that I want to be a psychologist(those people SIT and do their job, teehee and I like analyzing people), and maybe try massage therapy, so I can feel people up and get paid to do it in the future.

But man, that tuition... With the costs for a whole semester, I'd have to sell a few organs!

So, anyone attending MSU? How does one go through college at that particular place every day?

it can be difficult and i strongly recommend researching your field prior to studding it. their isnt any point tossing money at something then bailing becuase ya dont like it. it was rather enjoyable going to school rather then working but i prefer making money to not.

the difference in salaries is pretty big when you finish. my starting wage will be more then what my gf makes as a manager at a non collage requiring job.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

      Old man?

I've seen Vietnam vets and old men that had strokes in my college.

I agree with RD. Well, I say go for it, and best of luck to you, CK.

          Community College!

I went back in my 30's and got an ASSociate Degree in Chemistry - and suddenly I am lving on my own!

AND I PAID MY WAY THROUGH!! NO FLUFFING STUDENT LOAN DEBTS WHEN I WAS FINISHED!!

Give it a shot, at least for the first two years... I think it's foolish to pay 10 times the price for the same education!

And I did it in New Jersey

          Good luck.

          Peace.

          MOO!

I wouldn't worry too much about not preparing in High School--that's just some bull**** people who have lost touch with reality (i.e.: most Americans) spout out.

High School =/= the real world.

MOST people don't have damnest idea of what they're going to do in college. That's really what the first year is for.

I agree with Rodak. Go to community college. At least for two years. Do well there and you can get into a number of good state colleges (with scholarships, no less) and study the field you want to study. That's what I'm doing.

In fact, you and I have something in common, Crimson Knight (despite the age difference). I've also had to deal with some bad family situations throughout High School (hell, all my life). Which is why I've got some poor marks (not all of them grades, mind you) on my record.

--Though, I really have no experience with college (I'm actually still in High School, myself doing home school and actually maintaining a 4.0). I'm just repeating what some very intelligent people have advised me on after I went through a nervous breakdown having to do with wondering how I'm going to get into college without a good High School record. In truth, it really doesn't matter as much as the people running the grade schools say it does.

Might want to check that out. I'd heard that the President just signed a bill to increase the availability of student aid to more people. Pell grant caps were supposed to be doubled and I've heard loan interest rates were halved. As far as financing goes, the legwork you put in at the front end goes a long ways towards alleviating difficulty once you graduate.

I'd second the JC motion, if you're not absolutely sure that Psychology is the way to go for you, better to test the waters where it's cheap. However, if you're certain of your course, then I'd recommend you do some research about which schools local to you offer the best Psych program, and specifically, which offer the best services to transition from academia to a professional career (assuming you don't want to teach it). My experience with state schools is that they do a reasonably good job of offering a broad education, but don't do so well in prepping their students for the professional world.

I spent two years at JC and transitioned into a state school in CA. Be sure the classes you take in JC are transferrable credits to whatever school you'll be attending next. And keep a sharp eye on your transcripts, if there's a way to screw those up, a state school bureaucracy will find it.

Edit: And good luck, full marks to you for pushing yourself to do more. It takes a lot of courage to go back to school once you've left.

Um....current MSU student here. Enjoying my 7th year! Seriously. Though in my defense, I do already have a degree from the fine institution.

MSU is huge. I mean GIANT. There's 40,000+ students, so the difference between people's experiences can be huge.

I'd be more than willing to answer any questions you have about it, btw. I may not have all the answers, but I'll do my best!

Let me say, though, that I do love the place lots and lots. I wouldn't have been here for 7 years if I didn't.

After some searching, I think I've found something to tide me over, until I can really get up in the world, thanks to you guys!

I'll be sure to ask more questions if I happen to come across any problems.

Re: Old man wants to go to college.

Well its not funny people. I am glad that he is going to college. So am I matter a fact. But its not easy. The past few days I couldn't goto college because I had a cold and I didn't want anybody to catch it. Also today I am not going to college because I am still fighting my cold and I have a dentist appointment today. My wife has a cold as well and she is my only transportation to take me to the place, but what ya expect i only live 10 miles out of town. lol

Also my wife checked another college that has better art program than U of M in ann arbor or Devry put together. lol And cost less. Im going into game designing. The college I am at doesn't have the program, so pretty much I am struggling in my computer class. But hey atleast I am trying. I just had to drop one class because I couldn't keep up with the homework and the instructor was going to fast and I didn't know what chapter I was supposed to do. The stupid instructor jumps around. I went and seen my counsoler and told her what was going on. I filled out and signed the paper and got the instructor's sig and dropped it of to the campus service office. So thats why I dropped the class.

I understand of reading game manuals and playing video games, but I can't read a 200 page book. I have a very low level reading skill.

                        So thats about it.
