X-com: Looking for a few good soldiers.

Alright. Even though my DosBox is making this game run like greased lightning, I can get the thing to slow down enough to manage playing it. Considering that the last time I played it on the DoSBox it ran quite the opposite (( slow as hell but playable)).

So... that being said. I want to play through a game, so I'm going to copy Garr's Idea ((sorry Garr)) and ask if anyone would like to be a soldier in the game. Enlist! We need your help to fight the alien menace! Give me a name and some personality traits (( is he serious about the war, does he like to joke, does he mack on all the female officers, does she mack on the males, what nationality, did he or she use drugs or drink alchohol at one point, or would you like them to have a storyline where they experience that during thier X-com career. That sorta thing.

And yes like I said, I realize Garr was doing the same thing a bit ago, so it is totally his original idea. But since it got me wanting to play X-com again, no sense in not trying the same thing.))

Excerpt Recorded from Secret U.N Meeting
    December 11th 1998
    Geneva

Russian Ambassador: Ladies and Gentlemen of the U.N. Peace Council. The floor now recognizes *****fzzx* , founder and owner of X-com. Mr. *fzzzxx* the floor is yours.

Me: Thank you Mr. Ambassador. I know you are all very busy men, which is why I will get straight to the point of this meeting.

Ladies and Gentlemen. We are at war. This war is not fought amongst ourselves, nor has it been a matter of public knowledge. But this war does exist. The enemy is not indeed even human. He is from the skies. Yes. The Earth is under attack from Extra-terrestrial life forms.

Does anyone not think this is true? Because I do indeed read some doubt in you. many of these sightings may be part of an elaborate hoax or some undercover operation run by one of your foreign neighbors. And I honestly ask you, if you thought that were true, why do we all now convene at this meeting?

Extra-terrestrials are real. And they don't discriminate. These aliens do not care if a person is American or German. They don't give a damn about Muslims or Catholics. They do not see our planet divided by borders. They view us all the same, so we should fight them as such.

In August of this year, Japan was the first to take a step toward combatting this menace. The government formed the Kiryu-Kai and indeed it was quite a combat force. And so I commend Japan for taking the first bold steps.

    *clapping*

The Kiryu-Kai however had a few severe problems however and it was the reason why this program failed. I will point out the two biggest flaws. The second, was of course the budget. The Japanese can only afford to place so much money in such a program. They have other responsibilities and much of their economy must go to other resources. The same of course applies to every country that exists on this planet. One country cannot alone afford to chase UFOs. Nor should we ask this of them.

The first reason as to why Kiryu-Kai failed is because of it's range of deployment. As I said, these Aliens do not wish to attack any sole countries, they wish to attack us all. Japan could only keep Kiryu-Kai within it's borders; to chase a UFO outside Japanese flight space might inadvertantly trigger a war. And trust me... we do not need to start any wars amongst ourselves.

French Ambassador: Meester *Fzzzzkzz* U haf not told us theengs we do not know of. PLeese eef ou haf come to offer a solution, we would all like to hear of that eenstead.

Me: Of course. Well then, what I present to this meeting is this: I call it... X-com. The Extraterrestrial Combat Unit.

X-com is a program, solely dedicated to combating the alien menace. X-com will be equipped with the most advanced technology and weapons on the planet. From air craft, to surface tanks, X-com will be it's own army. Independent from all countries, yet answering to all of them. Our jurisdiction will have no limit and our funds will be provided by all of you. And of course, we will have all but the best soldiers, trained and combat ready.

Chinese: This is preposterous. An army that we do not control, but is powerful enough to invade our own countries? What you ask is ridiculous.

British: And yet it almost seems that it is the only way.

Italy: But the Chinese are right. It would be a risk to form something this powerful.

Me: Ladies and Gentleman. You are correct. We could be compared to as a private country. Certainly powerful enough to attempt an invasion. But as I said, X-com will be formed to protect you all. We will not be formed so that we can attempt an invasion, we will be formed so that we can attempt to stop one.

Chinese: Still, what guarantee do we have that X-com would not even attempt such a thing?

Me: Because without you all, X-com doesn't exist. We will be dependent on the countries to provide us with soldiers, weapons, aircraft, Scientists and of course funds to run this program. This way, all of the countries in the world can help, even small countries. And while you will have access to all of X-com's movement, specs and operations, the leaders will not have the undaunted task of keeping it running. In return, the countries will expect us to defend their cities and citizens.

THis is my proposal Ladies and Gentlemen. It really is up to you to decide. But I must ask you, if not now, then when? They already have the advantage. We don't know anything about them except they live out there, somewhere. But that sure as hell doesn't mean we should just give in or ignore the problem. They're coming, whether we have X-com or not. Truthfully I'd rather risk trying X-com and losing, then not have done anything and losing.

Thank you for your time ladies and Gentleman.

    Journal of the Director

The countries of the world finally agreed to X-com. Whether it was due to the speech given in front of the U.N. or because they hadn't thought of any better ideas is anyone's guess. But now that the final confirmation has been delivered, that question has become moot.

X-com is now a reality. Everyday I wake up to the sounds of construction, as the first base quickly takes form. We'll have our first soldiers soon and I hear the new Interceptors are already scheduled to be delivered sometime today. The world has finally decided to take this alien invasion seriously. It's about time they joined in my sentiment.

X-com. It really all started all those years ago, when I first came to grips that aliens really existed. Now I have the means to put an end to these bastards once and for all. I am not going to fail these people like I did my sister. It's time for war.

What the hell happened to Garr's thread? And I can see jumping on a trend like Ronald and Me or something, but wholesale ripping off someone else's idea? And thinking it's okay by saying sorry?

(This is the first time I used the minotaur emoticon, so I'm not sure if I'm using it correctly).

Thinking on it, you are kind of right. I really don't want to impose on Garr, really I just feel like giving X-com another go. But Hell, I was only offering soldier name spots cause I'd thought it be cool for those that might have died in Garr's game to have another shot in mine.

So that being said, if you still want a name slot or something, I'll still do that, but I'l' save the whole thing until later, sometime after Garr is done with his.

He personally doesn't want to fight the aliens and privately hopes they would "burn this damned civilization to the ground". He prefers to stay away from other people (partly because he hates the sound of swearing) and is somewhat unpredictable in nature. And he loves nature.
