Insomniac claims to have invented spherical worlds

yeah, not like REAL planets are round or anything. yeah, spherical worlds? totally your creation.

    http://kotaku.com/gaming/insomniac-d...mes-307411.php

of course, if they're talking about just using smaller spherical worlds in games, uh... sonic adventure 2 beat them to that looooooong ago. and if you don't mind going back into the 2D realm, one of yoshi's island's boss battles did it too.

taking credit for everything is fun!

Don't know where in that quote they claimed they were the first to do it, but, Mario Galaxy (from what I've seen) closely resembles the way it was utilized in R&C.

And, really, it's not like Insomiac called out Miyamoto as a hack or something. They just said they were flattered.

    THAT BIG BAD INSOMNIAC1!!

flattered? why? they didnt do it first. they likely got the idea from nintendo's own yoshi's island or sonic adventure 2. the only way they could honestly feel "flattered" is because nintendo used the same games as inspiration as they did.

That's true, but they cannot rightfully take credit for the idea. and they do anyways. that's why people are calling attention to this.

It would be amazing to think that Miyamoto-san thought that was so cool that he wanted to incorporate it into Mario Galaxy.

I still think it's just as stupid of a comment as if they would have said mario galaxy's platforming elements may have been inspired by ratchet and clank.

also, given how long nintendo tends to take developing mario games, it's entirely possible that mario galaxy's planet-based gameplay ideas predate ratchet and clank.

Re: Insomniac claims to have invented spherical worlds

I'm just saying that article is blowing the quote out of proportion, and the people commenting on that article are blowing it out proportion and you are also blowing it out of proportion. They never claimed Miyamoto was ripping them off, or even that they knew for sure he was inspired by them. I dunno, if I saw Miyamoto, the god of the genre Ratchet and Clank is in, utilize something relatively unique to your franchise I'd be overwhelmed with emotion. I mean, as stated in the quote: "It would be amazing to think that Miyamoto-san thought that was so cool that he wanted to incorporate it into Mario Galaxy." ****, let some developers have their day in the sun or some ****. They're not hurting anyone. That's all I'm saying.

Instead of you all turning Insomniac into some horrible egotistical jack off bunch.

Re: Insomniac claims to have invented spherical worlds

I don't share the same viewpoint as the idiot commenters at kotaku.

I'm saying it's dumb of insomniac to even think that nintendo could possibly be inspired by ratchet and clank by using a gameplay element that nintendo planted the seeds of, sega evolved, and insomniac further evolved.

saying nintendo might be inspired by that in ratchet and clank is no different than if someone were to assume nintendo was also inspired by the platforming gameplay of ratchet and clank.

it's planet based gameplay. planets are round. always have been. THAT is where nintendo got the idea from.

not saying insomniac is saying nintendo ripped them off. I read the article. I'm just saying insomniac is taking credit for a gameplay element that they have no right to.

Just because Nintendo planted the seeds for the platformer, doesn't mean they are now somehow invincible from being inspired by any other game series. I know, it must be impossible that Miyamoto is inspired by anyone at all.

Though, I guess Miyamoto came up with the idea before Mario Sunshine. So, we can deliver the news to Insomniac and break their little hearts.

Ratchet and Clank though is pretty much the defining point of that gameplay element, though. That's all I'm saying.

Had they said "the design of our spherical worlds", I wouldnt take issue, and I don't think anyone else would have either. but they only said "spherical worlds". nothing more.

Both of you are SWANS. The quote pretty much implies that they think they inspired Nintendo directly. Now without having played any of the Ratchet and Clank games so I have no idea what spherical worlds exactly means, it's kind of a stretch for them to take that stance. Is it impossible no, just really unlikely.

But then who cares that they said something? Should I boycott Insomniac games because of this? Am I going to care about this tomorrow? Does a semantical phrasing really matter that much? If Ryan Schneider doesn't have a wikipedia page does he really exist?

I was expecting a topic about a guy who had a sleeping disorder and made some kind of crazy artificial world after weeks of sleepless nights. I think we're all a little disappointed by this topic.

The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

                            Yeah. I know I was.

I think we can all agree that "spherical worlds" is kind of a silly phrase.
