You ever have a lot of fun with a bargain bin game?

I was at the mall with my friends today, and one of them convinced me to pick up Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy for the GameCube. It was sitting in one of those bargain bins at GameStop and the condition was pretty good--had the manual and everything. Set me back about $9.00. I used my GameStop card to get a little bit of a discount.

I ended up playing it for about an hour when I got it home. Wow, what a fun platformer it was. Too bad it wasn't a commercial success. The game is executed quite beautifully and there are a lot of fun platforming elements to be had. No voice acting--just text. I can't wait to get back into it after my studies this week.

It shows you don't have to spend $60 to have a good time. (And it works wonderfully on my Wii.) After all the money I spent on my PS3, 360 and Wii this past month, it's refreshing to find a fun game in, of all places, a bargain bin.

You guys ever find that one game in a bargain table and find it really fun? Great way to save money, and plus, you might be surprised.

There's a lot of GOLD sitting around that could have done well but ended up in the big bin for whatever reason. I have a couple of recommendations myself:

p.s. I consider "bargain bin" titles to be any game that was released at a price that was lower than most of the competition or was reduced in price really early. Even though Final Fantasy XII is 15$ at ebgames, I obviously don't consider it a bargain bin title.

Rygar - sadly overlooked action game that was pretty much killed by Devil May Cry.

Primal - a fantastic ps2 adventure game developed by Sony's european team. Probably the best graphics on the ps2 for the time, fantastic story, writing, voice acting... the only real downfall was the fact that it was a pretty slow game given it's adventure/puzzle aspects over straight up action.

Haven: Call of the King - I remember this being hyped up a bit as like... the Jak and Daxter beater. It was a pretty solid platformer that was quickly forgotten.

Kya - terrible ending, but a woefully underrated platformer with a terrific fighting system.

Maximo - all the lame new gamers deemed it too hard and it ended up right in the trash as a result. The sequel is a lot rarer but adds a lot of action to spice things up.

Neighbors From Hell - a fun game that reminded me of that EA ghost game where you haunted things.

There was also this really fun party fighting game that starred monsters in a sort of campy 1950s environment but I forgot the name. Reminded me of King of Monsters.

I had fun with Musashi Samurai Legend... not with the actually game, of course, but it was a nice frisbee.

That was a pretty good movie, but the ending was horrible.

The official reason the ending was so bad is because the directors dog ate the end of the script.

For $3 I bought a sort of arena space shooter type game for PS1 that was pretty good.

Then there's all the $10 games they came out with in the later years of the PS1. The only one I didn't like was Largo Winch.

Star Trek Encounters, aside from HORRID load times, is a decent space shooter you should be able to find for only $10.

Nowadays it's pretty easy to get a good game for $20 or less, considering every last-gen console has some sort of greatest hits list.

                Freedom Fighters (ps2)

A damn good shooter, with a great premise.

I moderately enjoyed those two. And I really loved Indigo Prophecy, then it got a Matrix complex and I realized your choices really weren't all that important. I really would have loved that game to turn out better than it did.

Edit: In response to this topic:

Pitfall 3D anyone? That game was a blast and I got it for like 5 bucks. Too bad it got stolen.

I got Gitaroo Man for 25 bucks on clearance before all the hype. I also picked up Magic Pengel for 15 bucks on clearance.

Sometimes, the best games are right under your nose.....and under $5.

Got KotOR for $10. It was really fun up until the Xbox 360 decided it wasn't really backwards compatible.
