View Full Version : I miss RM 1.

There were so many kick@ss games for it. And so many crappy ones that I played anyway, but I digress. Let's discuss the ones that mattered.

Eternal Retardia!
It really revolutionized the genre.
Whatever that means.
I actually played a few games for RM1, but never made any. I liked Remote Control (of course), and I played a game with a robot in it. Mostly I just helped Gwommy make his box moving game, which a few people seemed to like, but he never finished, because he'll get excited about something and drop it the next day.

ER! was kinda fun. It was like one of the first RM games, if I remember correctly. I played it back when all the games had their own logos/pages. I remember playing it around the same time I played Expedition, Lunar Pandemonium, Witch Be Bad, and all the other first-generation RM games. Lunar Pandemonium, Loki's game, was pretty awesome. You could choose to have one of like eight different characters, and the whole course of the game was supposed to be altered depending on who you chose. I don't think it ever made it past the demo stage, though.

The Spiteful Dead is in my opinion, the greatest RPGM full game to ever be released. It had its problems, but all in all I actually enjoyed spending 15+ hours on it. Great character development.

02-03-2005, 02:49 AM
Bah. I always saw RM as overated.
However, its fun factor *was* through the roof. I did enjoy it a lot. Given no one else had done such a thing before, Alzar set a gold standard by which RPGM games were set.
Dew Quest was a really great game. Dungeons kind of needed some work though.
I was looking forward to Radiant Darkness quite a bit. If you release it, I'll need to find an emulator that doesn't freeze during battles. That's what kept me from getting some battle shot's of PS's jaw-dropping monster graphics I drew. [RD] was the most raw fun I ever had with any RPGM game, and I'm fairly sure would a full version of it come out, it would rape The Spiteful Dead in its overall quality. Both games had work poured into them, to actually make them fun. They weren't haphazardly thrown together like the RPGM fare people are used to.
Can't wait to see what some people here do in the future. A lot of creative people here.

Who are yous guys!?!? Toecutter?? Monkey!??! OMG THIS BOARD SUCKS
I miss RPG Maker 1 too. Mostly I miss getting games and trying them out. And making games. Because, I didn't do that with RPG Maker 2. I just played RPG Maker 2 for a little bit and went "This doesn't seem worth it and I don't have time anymore and I can't get anyone else's game anyway cos I don't have a sharkport or whatever." And it was sad.
One of the first games I played was Mr. Vile's Quest, and I really liked it because it made me laugh and had a fun/stupid story. Games rarely make me laugh, except for those old Sam and Max games, and I missed that feeling. And I rarely laugh during RPGs.
The best thing about RPG Maker 2 was when I was trying out the different songs and thought, wow these songs don't suck poopy like RPG Maker 1 songs, this has potential. Then I played and my retarded lego-man looking character walked around and blurred everything and I went :( Then I did scripting and assigned the script to the thing and assigned the thing to the thing and set up the thing with the thing and went :( I liked the ease of RPG Maker 1 despite it's non power.
The moral of the story is, :sleep

I never really played RM2 much either, which is a shame considering that I got a free copy. I'd like to try some Pavilion-made games for it sometime and see what it can do.
I'm with Paul on this one. I missed out on the classic RPGM1 gen games.
EDIT: Hey! I can even edit Paul's post! L33t! *ahem*, I mean, I figured... Yeah...

Remote Control was the first RPGM game I ever played, and I was just smiling the entire time.
[Radiant Darkness] had the most innovative puzzles and design. It was also the most well put together, no doubt. Probably the only game I've played other than Zelda where the dungeons are actually enjoyable.
Police State, despite the GODAWFUL DIFFICULTY AND REPETITIVE BATTLES, was a lot of fun to play just to see what could be done outside of a traditional RPG. If it was ever finished, it would have been one of the most ambitious, feature-overloaded games for RPGM.
Bingo's F'ed up Qwest was a piddly poop riot. Musical H.A.I.R.S. had its moments, too.
Puzzle Buster and The Collectible Card Game RPG were a couple of my favorites, mostly because they took RPG Maker in a totally different direction from what it was intended for.
The Tale of Cloran Hastings is up there with [RD] in terms of overall presentation. It's short though - the entire game reminds me of a poem.
Seinfeldinator was HILARIOUS.
That's all I got for now, but there were MANY more great one's I'm forgetting.
Dreamknight
02-03-2005, 09:12 AM
Cloran Hastings was really fun, as was police state. I never played RD, and Spiteful Dead was crazy cool.
I know I mention it everytime we talk about RM games, but my favorite far and away was "Isle Of Lost Souls", despite having the laaaammmmeeee default battle system and making use of the "level up before you go on" doctrine of gaming, the story had so many different branches and possibilities that it was simply fun to make all the game altering choices.
Another game I played was Slaughterhouse, I think it's only at the mag and was a horror game, although really short the presentation was pretty well done and finding the Razor Man (bad guy in the game) was pretty fun.
I also liked most of Dias Flac's games, which were pretty much FAMOUS around the gamefaqs boards where I came from :p

Before recently, all I've played is Remote Control, Smitpok, and the Legend of Pants demo.
I'm playing through some RPGM1 games now. I played the Eternal Retardia! series, as well as Shut Up, *****!. My little brother is playing Tsebaoth, or whatever the hell it's called, which I might try myself, and after that I'll start Cocaine Quest.
Don't forget Fufu The Acid Trip Bunny.

I really enjoyed "Remote Control", "Dash Handsome", and the demo - "Robotek", and "Devil Hunter Motoko" and "Crystal Hearts", and "Garden game", and "Radiant Darkness".
I really enjoyed working on my games, "Treasure Hunters", "Whispers in the Woods" and "Dark Illusions"
I think making the games are just as much fun as playing them.
I defintally enjoyed making the puzzles in my games.

Spiteful Dead is my favorite RPGM1 game. I also particularly liked Police State, Expedition, Radiant Darkness and Dark Illusions. I was rather sleep deprived when I first played Remote Control and found even stupid things funny. Rone's games were uninnovative, but had a solid, Tolkien-esque, old-school nostaglic feel to them.

why doesnt anyone go back and make more RPGM1 games?
'Cause RPGM1 is dead? Well, okay it isn't. I'd gladly make another RPGM1 game, though. It's just that this one game I'm working on keeps switching between RPGM1 and RPGM2 (thus I'm not making any progress). On one hand, RPGM1 is still my favorite development tool so far and I kinda like making custom (or altered) sprites for it despite my lack of artistic skill, and on the other hand RPGM2 holds so much more potential and I wouldn't be nearly as limited in the things I could do for stuff like CBSs.
Hmm, games I liked... Well, I'll start with Spiteful Dead. So far it's my favorite. Never finished it, but some of the mini-games were pretty good and the story seemed so big for an RPGM1 game. I also liked Remote Control, if only for the arcade. Fu Fu was interesting enough.

Who made the Spiteful Dead? I'll have to try that one sometime.
The Dave Carter series was always pretty rock solid. dave and nixon are custom art champions.
And I remember having a lot of fun playing Michael's Homosexual Adventure. I think that was the second game I ever played.
BeeZee
02-04-2005, 04:37 PM
SD was made by Xisthruos, if I spelled that right, which I probably didn't.
I always really liked Dave Carter's artwork, and he's been nothing but awesome to me regarding my own material, but I could never get into his games. I think the integration of the generic RM1 battle system into his games kind of killed the innovation for me.

i used to collect virtually every full/demo game made for rpg1. If i saw someone had a game i would get it. However getting around to playing them was another story. Although i really did enjoy the spiteful dead.

You should seriously consider compiling all those games into one spot, zipping the directory, and sending it to the pav. And the pav should have one massive "every RPGM1 game" download. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Yeah i can recall when this site had only about 6 or 7 demo games as that is what was available at the time. I started way back then. Every now and then i would let some time lapse in between, only to scramble later on and try to get everything.
So pretty much i would have to go through quite a number of cds i have for backup crap, find the games (or what was there) and put them all together. I also know that at some point i tried to name the zip files to their actual title, so years down the road i would know what the hell they are (course that wasnt always the case).
Ok i can give it a shot this weekend and see what i can come up with for the time being.
What sucks is im pretty sure some had upgraded demos/full, but kept the zip name the same as the older version they had. Ok enough babbling. keep you posted---

I've been wanting to make another RPGM game for a while, but I haven't had time and didn't think there was much interest. I guess the reminiscing's got me excited. Plus I've got mono right now, so I figure I've got some time to kill anyway.
But yeah, the key is going to be to get it done FAST. I think if I plan everything out in detail (the script, puzzles, etc.) before even turning RPGM on, that will help keep me focused (instead of mindlessly dancing with the cursor to the rhythm of home:3).

Yes, looking at old notes can be fun. So fun, I dedicated a whole web page to the stuff that didn't make it or were changed in Jester's Hunt.
Anyway, offhand, I can think of three things I wish could've been better about RPGM1.
*The inability to have more than one character/object move at the same time.
*The lack of any sort of real variable.
*Lack of interest for the Demo mode in Anime Maker (seriously, how many people did anything with that?)
Other than that, RPGM1's golden.

I said RPGM1 was going to come back in a big way, and nobody seemed to believe me, looking back, it's kind of funny.
"why doesnt anyone go back and make more RPGM1 games?"
I would go back to RPGM1, if I had a working PS console...my console's hardware is fried (yeah, seriously) and I've been meaning to renew my Playstation for months now. Blades & Storms is STILL in the making, after almost 3 years...I feel like I'm the only pavilionite who's been working on the same game for this long. if you have a dex drive, you can just use a PS emulator like epsxe to finish it.
Dallas Alvis
02-06-2005, 01:07 AM
Hey, there's an idea. I lost epsxe when I restored my PC. Getting epsxe isn't a problem, it's configuring it with my laptop that's tricky. But now that you mentioned it, my real problem lies with dex drive, I can't install it with the floppys because my laptop doesn't have a floppy disk drive, it only has a cd/dvd-rw drive.
But, if the dex drive program from the site works, I suppose I could give that a whirl and see if I can finally finish this game or not, after I sort this "move across the country again" thing, that is.
Unfortunately, the game uses the dreaded default battle system (hey, it's a big game, alright?)
Anyways, I'm tired. Nite Nite, peoples. I'll be back next month. :p

I feel like I'm the only pavilionite who's been working on the same game for this long. Slayers' Reign, since November 2001. Granted, it's been worked on off and on, and most of the time I restarted from scratch (right now, there's no playable version and I'm not working on it, but eventually...)Unfortunately, the game uses the dreaded default battle system I don't find much of a problem with that, as long as the battles are balanced. And yeah, some games just can't be made with a CBS without sacrificing certain elements like sidequests and the ability to go to previously visited places.

Highwind, I just came across some random interview for your game. (By DragonProductions, did he used to be a member here?) Thought you might like to see it.
COMMENTS:What can I say about musical hairs? Well I could say it was funny, but then I would be way off because it is way funnier than expected . Everything from the story to the characters, and even the monsters names were down right hilarious, I even chocked when I went to get a drink of water from my glass. The point is I haven't laughed this hard since I played remote control. I will admit that it is a short game, but that's not really a bad thing. the only complaint I have is this, I don't know if the creator did this on purpose or not, but some of the items that you use to build up your character can be used over and over again. This can be a bad thing for those who like to cheat. It could mess up the battles in the beginning and end, but even without the battles the game is great. As for the jokes, they are crude, sick, and of course some on culture, and what can I say other then I liked that. This game was written for the adults. Ok now I am going to break down the game into categories, and describe why the score is as such.
Presentation:
Well all that was missing was a neat little bow to complete it. All the sample dungeons , custom dungeons, tile usage, and sound effects were well placed and used. It was one of those games that I would not mind playing again, not just to see how the buildings and layouts were done, but to see those funny jokes again. Gets an 8
Game play:
Game play is easy, and fun. The monsters were easy, and the stat items could be used over again, but other than that no complaints here get a 7 for the stat building items being able to be used over again. Fix that if you didn't intend for that.
Characters:
with there being only 2 main characters, and 1 supporting characters, they were all different all had their flaws, own personality, and fit well in the story enough said. get a 9 for characters
Storyline:
Funny, short, right to the point, everything flows nicely no bumps along the way, I give it a 10.
Overall score: 8.5

This doesn't really add to the topic or anything, but it has to be said.
It's driving me crazy how I can't tell anybody about my new game yet! Darn this new rule of mine that I can't announce a game until I have something to show!
'Cause you know I've announced maybe 10 games since Jester's Hunt, and haven't done anything with them (save for one, which didn't get far past being a demo).

I can't get past designing a world or dungeon in RPGM2. It's just so freaking slow and difficult. Anyone know of any tips?
As for games I've played, Michigan Adventure, Adventure(I think that was the name, it was a demo made by Starbs), George W, Tseboth: The Warlike Nature of Him(sic), FuFu, Musical Hairs, that one made by SchoolBus with the sprite that looks like a naked woman surfing as the second to last boss, Smitpok, and probably a few more that I can't remember now.
I think I'll have to join in on redoing RPGM1, it WAS teh roxxors.

The only tip I can think of is to think about how great a map can look if you try hard enough.

I miss the custom sprites and intro screen. Of course, I like what I've managed to do with RPGM2 also.
FAVORITE GAMES
* Fu-Fu The Acid Trip Bunny *
Best RPGM 2-D sidescroller... maybe the only one. Awsome custom intro and sprites.
* NanoBot *
Short and sweet.
* Dash Handsom *
Wish it had been a full game. Great use of items and custom battle system.
* Jester's Quest *
The game that showed I wasn't the only one who wanted to make a "fetch quest" with RPGM. And the one I worried about most during the contest. :red
* Legend Of Pants *
Again... wish it had been a full game. Funny.

Ah, RPGM1, my first love. This topic brings back so many memories. We were really on the verge of a revival here.
Alas, let us all remember this fantastic game. Is anyone still playing or making games for it?

It wasn't that long ago that I released my last game for it. "Cursed Desires".
My best puzzle work. And one that I finally got to use Sniffy's Z sprite. A personal goal of mine.

Cursed Desires was good. I also followed through on my revival project and made Presto.\/
Von and I released them a couple of week from one another last summer.
RM1 will always be my favorite RPG Maker.

Monkey Brothers! Monkey Brothers! MONKEY BROTHERS! I think I'm just going to stop there to stop the annoyance. Anyway, yeah, I'm going to work on it still.

I really which I would have made another game for it. I just can't think of anything I'd be willing to put on it.
I'm kinda wondering if anybody ever took advantage of that "Demo" tool in Anime Maker. It had almost potential. If only one could switch the background and BGM out mid-movie and had more BGM choices.

Frankly, I doubt it. I bought (well actually it was my brother) RPG Maker so I can make games not for that little "demo" tool in Anime Maker. I mean honestly, I forgot that thing even existed. Also, there was no way to put any cool scenes that were made with Anime Maker into the RPG Maker games. So that's why people probably haven't been taking an advantage of it. If you could use created scenes made with it, then perhaps people would have used it.

I'm still supposed to make Clue for RM1 in my attempt to make a game for every RPG Maker. Who knows if it'll ever happen though. You guys know how I am. Hey, it's not like I'm the only one.

If I only had a dex drive before the EGM contest deadline... My game would have at least gotten a mention, despite how crappy it was, just for the fact that I had proven RPGM could do modern settings via custom tiles through anime maker. Then I'm fairly sure a few would have tried to duplicate that, as they had attempted with Alzar's game.

i play/create with rpgm 2. i find it suits me better. i have made serveral demo games for rpg maker 1, although i've never had a dex drive and i've erased everything off my ps1 memory cards. so, nobody but myself has really seen those demos.

I forgot that BZ was still around to post about his bad-ass game design skills.
Valk, I sent the Pavilion the teaser I did of my game Twilight of Eternity which was never put up and I don't think anyone has ever seen it? I was a little confuzzled about that, because I can't seem to find it on my computer anymore...I'll have to check my memory cards.
Tseboath
Was my first favorite "standard fantasy" RPG created with RPGM1, it was great besides the crappy dialogue.
Everyone said "hehehehe" at the end of their sentences--Which, I actually had my character based on Rone do that in my own RPG just to get back at him. :p
[Radiant Darkness]
Man, I remember BZ giving me the "secret unreleased" updates of this game all the time. Aside from RPGM1's limitations, the game rocked.
Smitpok
Never before have I laughed so much, mainly because that damn NPC goes on and on about how I don't have a penis. :lol
Robot Go Home
Fun first-gen game.
All I really remember now, except ER!, but I don't want to inflate Mora's already massive Game Design ego. I also wanted to mention all of the Dynasty Project games had the WORST DIALOGUE in history to them.
I think most people don't make games for RM1 anymore because you have to type out every damn word and you can't use a keyboard. That's why I quit. :\
Valk, you'll have to see if you can't find that demo I sent you. I'd like to see it up and get feedback.

I think most people don't make games for RM1 anymore because you have to type out every damn word and you can't use a keyboard. That's why I quit. Not me (though that's not to say that isn't the case with everyone else). Nope, my biggest problems with RPGM1 are the lack of variables and if/then commands. That, and it's kinda hard to do very good action sequences when you can only move one person at a time. I still want to use RPGM1, though. I just can't think of a thing to put on it.

I remember Blaze complaining to me that he had to be careful playing the Police State demo, because his mom might see the language on the screen. :)
