Questions to owners of the new PSP, or anyone who who knows about it.

I have the chance to trade a few extra transformers for a new model PSP (brand new, never opened) and while I'll likely go through with the deal, I had some questions:

    1. The speakers on the bottom of the system are gone. so while the old system had four speakers, the new model only has two. does the sound quality suffer at all? I noticed the old model's sound was pretty damn bad when the bottom speakers were blocked.

    2. is the new disc tray REALLY that awkward?

    3. the trade would be for the silver one, which comes with daxter. is that any good? does it come with an actual UMD case and manual? the family guy UMD would go in the trash immediately though.

    4. does it fit in the old cases? like the PSP slip case the original model came with. and if it fits in, is it a good fit? like, not gonna wobble around and fall out?

    5. does the silver color conceal smudges pretty well? the black sure as hell didnt.

    6. is it harder to hold without the raised parts on the back?

    7. are there any screen protectors available for it yet, aside from those ones you actually stick to the screen? I used to use logitec playgear visors. those were cool. something like that is preferred.

    8. I know the remote+earbuds that shipped with the old system won't work on the new system, so is there a new remote that works with it? that remote made using it as an MP3 player, while keeping it concealed and SAFE very easy. that's very important.

I love the PSP, and I really, really want another one. I just want to know everything possible before making the deal, even though the TFs I would give up for it are all duplicates, so it's pretty much a free PSP. or I'm wondering if I should just sell some stuff and grab an old model while they're still available new in stores.

It sounds great, I havent had any problems with it, and i like that the speakers are relocated, because if i was playing my PSP in bed, it would sit on my chest and the speakers would get blocked. Although the overall volume seems just a slight bit lower.

    2. is the new disc tray REALLY that awkward?

it isnt awkward at all, it is super easy, and there is a satisfying snap when the door closes. Personally, i like it better than the old one, as there arent as many moving mechanisms to mess up.

Daxter got a 9.0 on IGN, and us universally considered one of the best games on the PSP, so you cant go wrong with it, but it does NOT come with a regular PSP case, it is in a cardboard case and the manual is separate. I didnt like that much, but i've learned to deal withit. I'll probably try to buy a PSP game case from my local EB.

Valk, do you hate Family Guy so much that you would just toss out the disk? Its got some of the better episodes on it.

    4. does it fit in the old cases? like the PSP slip case the original model came with. and if it fits in, is it a good fit? like, not gonna wobble around and fall out?

It fits in the Playgear Pocket Case, but since it isnt as thick as the old PSP it can wobble, but not enough to cause damage or anything. The slip case the original PSP came in works fine, it fits snuggly, and you have to actually be TRYING to make the PSP fall out of the case for it to happen, and i just tested it, i was literally shaking the case, and it still didnt fall out

    5. does the silver color conceal smudges pretty well? the black sure as hell didnt.

I dont notice smudges AT ALL.

    6. is it harder to hold without the raised parts on the back?

Doesnt "hold" any differently than the old one IMO, i dont notice a difference except that it is lighter.

    7. are there any screen protectors available for it yet, aside from those ones you actually stick to the screen? I used to use logitec playgear visors. those were cool. something like that is preferred.

I've only ever used those magnetic covers or whatever they are, that stick to the screen, so i dont know what anything else is like. I hope Logitec releases a new playgear pocket that can be used with either/or.

    8. I know the remote+earbuds that shipped with the old system won't work on the new system, so is there a new remote that works with it? that remote made using it as an MP3 player, while keeping it concealed and SAFE very easy. that's very important.

I know the old remote portion does NOT work, but you can remove the earbuds and use them alone. I do belive that there is a new earbud/remote out or coming out, but i dont know for sure. Oh wait, i just checked ebgames.com, and there are headphones with a remote being released this week.

I love the PSP, and I really, really want another one. I just want to know everything possible before making the deal, even though the TFs I would give up for it are all duplicates, so it's pretty much a free PSP. or I'm wondering if I should just sell some stuff and grab an old model while they're still available new in stores.
I personally love the new PSP, and if you dont plan on doing anything with custom firmware or anything, then it is perfect. Since there is a new headset/remote accessory being released, then there is no reason you shouldnt get the new PSP.

Re: Questions to owners of the new PSP, or anyone who who knows about it.

1: The sound is just as good as if you didn't have your thumbs over it which is great. Loco Roco now sounds fantastic without my pudgy fingers covering it.

2: No. It opens a lot wider so you don't have to carefully slam the UMD in the little "holder" and slam it down multiple times (my old model tray doesn't close sometimes so I have to push it down 2 or 3 times before it locks). The new disc tray opens up almost like a trunk, but putting in UMD's is pretty simple.

3: Daxter is a fantastic game and woefully underappreciated. It came out last year, and unlike earlier platformer games the camera doesn't suck. If you like the Jak series, then you'll find this to be a good spin-off that bridges the gap between the first and second game. Unfortunately, no box case; it comes in a little plastic carton. There is a manual, however.

4: The slip case? You mean the sock? Hehe, there aren't any 1st or 3rd party cases available yet and I threw away my SOCK when I bought the PSP 2 years ago. Honestly, the best case available is by Logitech (I hand cut some foam so it wouldn't wobble around) but it's been discontinued so good luck finding it. The slim does come with a plastic case, but the case itself scratches easily. Your PSP will look fine, but after a week the case will look like a battle took place on it.

5: Somewhat. They're not noticeable unless you hold it under the light but the case is nowhere near as glossy as the original model.

6: Not at all. It's so light you can practically rest it in your hands without getting cramps if you hold it parallel to the ground. If you hold it at chest level, you can rest it on your thumbs like the old model but since the speakers aren't on the bottom, you don't have to worry about muffled sound.

7: None that I know of but I never searched. Internet would be your friend here.

8: For whatever stupid reason, no, although Sony immediately promised one once they got huge complaints last week.

As for old models, Sony discontinued them. Every store in the country will probably have a MASSIVE sale so expect old PSP's to drop by 20-40% in the following months especially the holiday season.

Also, the Slim's firmware has been cracked and you don't even have to download. There's no longer a 1.50 kernel, but there's a workaround meaning the Slim's firmware is much easier to work with than the old model. Perhaps Sony is getting soft

Honestly, the Slim is awesome and MUCH more of an improvement over the PSP than the DS Lite was over the DS. The games load faster because part of the memory is stored internally, there's now 64mb of ram for developers (and homebrewers hoho), and the TV out means I can now record myself playing the games and write little reviews on them or creating video tutorials or something.

Yeah, awesome package but the lack of remote and effective case was a disappointment. Still, it's now 50 bux cheaper.

            thanks for the answers!

yes. although maybe I'll just disassemble it and keep the UMD casing in the event I ever need to replace the case of something actually important.

Well this is good news considering I plan on getting a PSP in the next month. And silver is one of my favorite colors.

All slim models contain the tv out but unfortunately it requires special cables from sony themselves which I think is kind of dumb (and playing games only uses composite or s-video I think). I work on televisions so I could probably make an adaptor for it...

When does the stand alone model come out?

Daxter is currently my favorite psp game, not only does it look great, but it plays great too, but it seems like one of the few serious efforts on the console.

They're actually just sound holes, but yes, I also wonder if the new one sounds like the old one while the bottom holes were covered or if the speakers themselves have been improved.
I haven't seen any comparison on this anywhere.
