At the risk of THIS trend happening again....

I just blew $386 today. I bought a Samsung Slimfit 30 inch HD CRT TV. I've had my eye on this TV since it came in earlier this year, and knew that once it dropped to closeout price, it would be in my price range. Closeout price was $598.99; being an open display model (which had never actually even been plugged in, let alone turned on), and using my discount (plus an extra percentage off, as one of the two coax inputs is completely broken off), I got it for under $400 with tax.

Minuses-It's heavy. Really heavy. 117 pounds. Plus, it only goes up to 720p. However, a 32 inch LCD with 1080p would cost me over $1000, and I cannot afford that much. Most of the smaller LCDs (under 32 inches)we have at my work which would be closer to my price range (but still more than the one I bought) only go up to 1080i, anyway. And I've heard that 720p looks better than 1080i anyway. So for right now, I'm happy having a TV that displays HD that was in my price range.

Pluses-The amount of inputs. I looked at the smaller LCDs at work that were in my price range ($350-500), and besides being smaller than the one I got (those were 23 and 26 inch LCDs), they had a problem with input options. I'll grant you, the ones in my price range were mostly Sylvanias, Magnavoxes, or no-name brands, so I wasn't expecting a lot of frills, but ALL of these that I looked at had either 1 HDMI and no component, or 1 component and no HDMI. Which is something I would not waste my money on. This 30 inch Samsung I bought has 2 HDMIs, 2 component, 2 coax (well, really 1; the other one was broken off....it's not like I'd ever have a reason to be using 2 coax inputs, anyway, though), and two RCA inputs. Oh, and there's at least one S-video input too, possibly two (I'll probably not use this input, either, so I didn't look too closely at it). I believe it also has a few digital audio outs, as well, which I really have no need for right now. Also, I've read that the black levels on HD CRT TVs is actually superior to LCD and plasma.

So taking into account how much I paid for it, and keeping in mind that I'll probably not have the ability in the near future to blow $1000 on a "better" TV, do you guys think I got a good deal? Mainly, I just wanted to take advantage of my up-convert DVD player, and my Xbox 360 (the Elite comes with an HDMI out and an HDMI cable).

It doesn't matter what we think. If you're happy with your purchase, then damn it, I'm happy, at least.

my grandparents tv takes like 4 people to carry it, 52 boobtoob special. not sure what its actually weight is though, maybe 300 range.

i really havent a clue about the specs and i buy tvs by price range not by what extra pop they dish out. my first tv was for 400 and it was a 21ich boobtoob to play video games, got it like 10 years ago, the next and last tv i bought was another 21inch and it had a dvd player build in, also a boobtoob and it was 250ish.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

            CRT wins everytime!
I have seen games playing on both, and I think that the crt is always crisper and better color.

CRT is always going to look better, but his is only a 30" and it's imposibly heavy. That's always going to be their downfall. You only get one chance to set it down. If you ever need to get behind it or move it again, god help you.

When the old 70s era TV I have burns out and it happens to be something that can't be repaired, my first destination will be a pawn shop.

If it's cheap, works, and I can plug videogame consoles into it, that's all that matters.

Well while CRTs do have a larger color spectrum, I think LCDs have much crisper text. For HD I really don't have a CRT HD TV to compare to my LCD monitor, but HD looks damn pretty on my 24" monitor. Of course CRTs also require a bit more tweaking, and usually end up losing their rectangular shape over time (the image not the TV). Plus I believe they use more energy.

and LCD's fade. everything has drawbacks.

                      I don't think I'll ever own a non-CRT display.

Depending on your cost of electricity and TV usage habits, one will be more economical per hour of use than the other.

It will vary from person to person. Plasma TVs have a shelf life of ~5 years; use it or lose it. LCDs and CRTs for all practical purposes you won't be worrying about shelf life. LCD TVs use about 0.3 watts per square inch of screen, CRTs about 0.35-.4 watts per square inch of screen, and plasmas about 0.35 watts per square inch of screen.

Of course, if you want to save the most money, buy 2nd hand.

My parents have a 52" TV. Im not sure what kind it is, but some bulb burned out inside like 5 months after getting it, and the entire screen wouldnt light up. Cost them $400 to replace the ****ing bulb since it wasnt part of the warrenty.

Ive got a 32" HD LCD. I love it.

They just don't make 'em like they used to. Today's new CRT TVs tend to be crap. Hell, even the LCD ones are often faulty: my parents had theirs repaired 3 times before the warranty expired. It has fortunately not crapped out on them since, even if it shows signs it's about ready to break again.
