    Vegetarianism

Is it safe? Is it healthy?

I could never do it, but I've heard both sides of the argument, and I knew of a vegetarian who had a heart attack in his 40s and was only slightly overweight. Just wondering what your guys' thoughts were.

      Damn, took my witty reply.

Anyways, I have a friend who's vegaterian and she's in no sense the healthiest person I know.

I've also known some old time vegaterians that go so long without food, their stomachs can't handle the meat and get all their red nutrients through pills and supliments.

      So silly.

        Vegetarianism = Bad health move

As said, your body becomes weaker as you're not getting as much protein.

I'll never do it. Life without meat is madness....least for me.

            Re: Vegetarianism

You can live a perfectly healthy vegetarian/vegan lifestyle if you know what the **** you're doing. Obviously you will need to find a good source of protein; I know beans are hella good for that, along with any soy products. I've heard of people missing out on their B-12 and screwing themselves up, also. B-12 is an important vitamin that helps red blood cells and nerve cells that most people get from meat products. Most breakfast cereals include B-12, but I'd suggest a multivitamin.

Vegetarianism can be a great health move. Safe for yourself and the environment.

Heart attacks do not come from meat. A lot of heart complications are hereditary.

I myself am not vegetarian, but I don't consume beef products, and I usually stay away from pork. It'd be very hard for me to be without chicken and sushi.

Read the internets about this stuff.

Why do we need the internets when we have the esteemed Smurtle here to enlighten us?

                Re: Vegetarianism

People shouldn't be eating animals that eat a bunch of food that could instead be grown to feed people. It's really inefficient.

                Vegetarianism isn't dangerous at all.

Then what would we do with all the extra cows/chickens/pigs we'll have on our hands?

I dont even think theres a place where pigs or chickens can roam free

Here I come Pav, like the Kool-Aid man barging into a funeral! Oh yeah!

Protein needs can easily be met from plant protein alone. Actually, many consider plant protein a much better source than animal protein based on the ratio of fat per gram of protein. If you're not planing on being vegen, then dairy products have plenty of protein in them as well.

Personally, I am not a vegetarian, nor do I have any morale reservations about consuming other animals, however I do not support overproduction of meat products or the strange phenomenon in American culture that puts emphasis on a proper meal requiring meat. I infrequently consume meat just out of preference and pretty much avoid red meat altogether. There have been occasions were I have gone a couple months at a time without eating any meat and can honestly say that it is not difficult to avoid at all. It is really kind of a habit that you get used to after a little while.

Heart Disease; sometimes it really doesn't matter what you do.

Sooo... I've been lacto-ovo for almost 4 years now. Some of my protein still comes from eggs and cheese, but beans, legumes and nuts are great, too. Lots of the "good" fats, plus lots of fiber.

My doctor applauded me for it-- I've kept type-2 diabetes in check, cholesterol and blood pressure dropped significantly, as well.

I didn't do it for health reasons, it was entirely a personal moral decision. So when that's also your motivation there are other products besides meat one tends to avoid. For example: I abstain from purchasing anything made of leather and food products containing gelatin.

Occasionally, I might feel I didn't get enough B-12 or Iron, etc, and I'll take a supplement, but that shouldn't be a phenomenon exclusive to vegetarians.
Oh my god! You are so beautiful.
I had no idea how beautiful you were.
