So I got a call today from my credit card's fraud department.

Apparently making 5 charges in one day trips it off, haha.

So today I got a Wii (0395 3261 1762 5719), my car fixed (which thankfully didn't cost that much but took 3 weeks because though the mechanic is good he's also really busy most of the time, but he fixed the problem for a lot cheaper than I thought it was going to be so I can't complain), some music cds and some other stuff. It was just funny to get a call from them and have to confirm the purchases I made. Guess I'm glad they're that anal about it.

It's not the amount, it's the type of purchases you make. Like, if you make a small purchase at a pump at a gas station and then nearly immediately make a large purchase at Best Buy or whatever will nearly always trigger their fraud alert (thieves like gas pumps to check whether a stolen card is valid or not simply because if it comes up stolen they can quickly get away).

What they look for is patterns outside your normal spending amount.

This is also why I don't use credit cards: total lack of privacy.

i had that happen once, i made them confirm who they where since i didnt realize they would do that. my stupid bank is still harping me about "fraud like actions" which resulted in their incompetency in a bank transfer that never worked. i dont have time to phone them and tell em to go away that its just them sucking. good to see their doing their job, saves some idiot filling your card with fraudulent purchases.

"No. No, I did not purchase a Nintendo Wii and I would thank you for removing the charge from my bill. Also, I will not be making any ATM cash withdrawals tonight. So if one were to show up it most certainly isn't me and should also be removed. No, thank you."

i've had them call me three times about odd use of my card, and every time i knew what it was about, (the time i ran my card at two non-working pumps at one station, and then a third pump at another, and when i was out of town and using my card for everything, in particular) so i guess the way they figure it out is reasonable.

Yeah I'm certainly not complaining. Of course I typically look at my credit activity at least once a week online and keep very good tabs on what I spend now that I have money to spend. But nice to know they're looking out to, and since it was all automated it was fairly simple to go through, though they don't always give the actual store name so sometimes it's kind of hard to match up your purchase though having the exact dollar amount usually lets you know which one.
