Drawn to Life (most unique DS game ever)

Drawn to Life comes out today (rather, it ships today and it'll probably be on shelves tomorrow). I'm really excited because I hate how most DS games barely use the second screen for anything but a menu or a mini-map.

The game focus is on drawing. You're a stylus wielding god who draws an avatar of sorts that must help the people of a dying village. After drawing your character, you run through 2d platform levels, kill monsters, and rescue missing items that will restore the village.

The game's heavy on the art and customization. Pretty much everything can be doodled right down the title screen which starts out plain but you can draw on it and the game will save your drawings so you'll have a custom title screen. Your hero is animatd based on legs, arms, chest, and head so you can mix and match parts to create unique heroes. In game, there are times when platforms are missing so you can even draw your own platforms to reach different areas of the game.

From the people who've played it, it's a really charming and unique game although the light-hearted religious based atmosphere turned some people off. It looks like a cool mix of Magic Pengel and Castlevania so I know I'll be buying it. So far, it's gotten a 9/10 from gamepro and a 7.9/10 from IGN.

EDIT: I'm surprised this isn't being released in Japan. THQ is an american developer but I'm sure Japanese gamers would eat this title up.

What if you can't draw and drawing is a painful chore that reminds you how God saw fit not to grace you with talent?

I don't know. I just don't think there's enough once you get past the draw-it-yourself aspect.

You don't just draw your character. You draw elements in the game.

              That changes nothing.

You mean besides pretty much the entire gameplay that revolves around you adding your own personal touch to the world such as platforms, weapons, appearance, and objects?

Without that, the game would be just another sidescroller. I think the DS has plenty of those...

And if you can't draw, I think that will make the game better. Seeing your poor scribbles come to a horribly animated life will be kind of surreal especially when you get to play with it.

In IRC's defense, as nifty an idea it is, it really doesn't change the gameplay...

I would've figured being able to draw your way through puzzles and stuff would be interesting. But then I haven't really read any info on the game. Guess I should do that before I try to defend it.

This is what my friend tells me. He pretty much draws stick figures and circles. It actually surprised me that he liked it because his tastes range from Halo - Halo 2.

That's pretty much what the IGN review said. It'd be one thing if you were drawing platforms wherever you wanted or you could just randomly draw a bazooka into the game or something but all you're really doing is changing the looks of items. When you can draw something and what it will do is all programmed in. If the game tells you to draw a gun you could draw a chair if you want (if you can fit it into the shape template) but it'll still be a gun in the game. You're not really changing anything, just the way it looks.

So, no interesting situations like drawing a cable to hook a drawbridge to a crank, or drawing an anvil (or canonball if you can't draw anvils) to drop on a boss's weak point?
